I’m putting together a Ghostbusters outfit for something to do as part of a longtime ambition, and for Halloween (or Hop-tu-naa as it’s known here) this year my friends are getting together in a medieval castle for a ‘haunted night’ so I figured I’d make the effort!
I’ve been working on the accessories recently, and thought I’d share some of my progress. I bought a job lot of toys from eBay and decided that I’d refurbish them, making them semi-realistic - basically what the toys from the cartoon might look like if they were used in the film series, as many guys on this site have done before me.
I really enjoyed putting these together. They’re no masterpieces but I’m really happy with the transformation. The weathering isn’t too apparent in these pics, as I wanted it to be quite subtle, but it’s there. Really makes a difference!
For the PKE Meter, I sanded, primed and painted the PKE shell a flat black. After that, I added chrome detail to the turnable knob using spray, and added the rest of the detailing by hand before weathering using a silver dry brush. I also added rubber washers around the bottom of the knobs, which was inspired by another RGB PKE that I’ve seen on here. I can’t remember who though, so I’m sorry and thankyou!
I also cut up the PKE wings, repainted them chrome and used some wooden dowel for the stem. I then added the red detail.
The final touch was a decal I designed and printed onto sticker paper for the screen.
Thanks guys! I actually surprised myself with how easy and how enjoyable I found it. It’s definitely spurred me on to do some more.
As CaptCyan knows, I have an Ecto in the works which requires a little TLC after a botched paint job, so that’s next on the list.. after the proton pack!
I’ve got to try that out if I manage to score one of the old PKEs, although obviously with the middle antenna already broken off, preferably, and painted in the RGB style.
You know, I always thought that middle antenna really sucked - it was never in the show and just looked a bit daft, so I was happy in this case to get rid of it.
Silly question perhaps, but how do you get it apart? I just got one for Christmas, and unlike the trap it doesn’t have any screws. Will it just break on the seam and then you glue it back together?
I’m in the same boat, from what I’ve been told you’ll have to score along the seam of the meter, and in separating the two halves will break the posts connecting the two halves together.
Yep guys, it’ll break the posts, but they’re easily reglued, or as I did, use rubber sealant rings on the knobs to hold the two halves together tightly (I nicked this idea from someone’s Kenner repaint, but I can’t remember who - sorry!).
