I know it’s quite expensive but I also know that for some few, price is not an issue. I also know that putting the most accurate costume possible is important for a lot of people. I thought that maybe, just maybe, there was such a person on this board. I was just trying to help. 
You know it would really help if people would keep things in perspective. ■■■■ like this gets blown way overboard in price. First off, there is kind of an understood rule, more of a guideline than a rule, that you don’t post ebay auctions that are not your own. but that is another issue.
The reality is, there is striving for accuracy and then there is being stupid. With vintage electronics like this prices can skyrocket because you are also competing with electronics collectors and not just us prop guys. The thing to remember here is perspective…are you going to spend more for a small belt accessory that will, for the most part, be completely over looked by everyone but us than you did on your entire proton pack. I don’t mean you personally, Doom. Yes these are rare, but you are better off being patient and waiting to score one for cheap considering what it is in relation to your suit.
This is what bugs the living hell out of me. Guys that spend $30 on their packs and $100 to get a belt gizmo. Keep it in perspective and keep the prices down. Resist the ‘gotta win’ obsession that ebay thrives on. If it costs more than $40, you are paying too much.
Can’t say I disagree with you PeteVenkman_Jedi. Like I said myself, that thing was out of my price range the moment it was over 20$. I know people go crazy sometime and buy overpriced stuff just because it’s accurate or because it’s supposedly rare. But who am I to judge what someone is willing to pay for accuracy? There’s apparently someone, somewhere, who’s willing to pay nearly 80$ for that thing (last time I checked). How can I know that there’s not a person around here willing to shell out an 81$ because that’s the last thing missing from his costume. Would I do that? Heeell no! I think it’s crazy. It’s way too much cash for something nobody will recongnise as accurate. But if we look at it differently, I know a lot of people who are calling me crazy for spending a lot of cash on a somewhat screen accurate proton pack that nearly nobody will recognise as screen accurate. Are they right? From their point of view… probably, but that thing sitting on my bench right now is important to me and I don’t regret a cent I put on it.
Anyway I’m very sorry if I encouraged something that shoudn’t be. Believe me when I say that’s the last thing I was trying to do. I value this forum too much to start and rub people the wrong way. In the future, I’ll try to use more common sense and if I see something that’s obviously too expensive, I’ll keep it to myself.
Finally, I apologize about promoting an auction that wasn’t mine.. I guess this newb still has a lot to learn.. :sigh:
wow, theres no reason to apologize. people just get mad cause the more people that know about it, the higher the price it will go for. however, seeing you did not have ill intentions, theres no reason anyone should be freaking out. if anything, people should be thanking you because im sure theres some people here who may have not seen it that now get a chance to bid on it. who ever has the deepest pockets, wins…sorry kiddies.

It does bug me though ,like PeteV said that people draw attention to things like this (which I was watching) and then they end up going for some ridiculous price because people get that “gotta win” fever and outprice it. I constantly, if not daily look for the rarer pieces by searching and sourcing things out so I just get a little peaved when someone points it out for all, thats all. Not saying its good or bad either way. I certainly wasn’t “freaking out” :lol:

You both have your points. This has been a problem with BTTF for a long time now. Since almost everything has been sourced now and everyone knows what it is it’s hard to get any of it and for a decent price. On the other hand it’s nice to spread the info to those who don’t know and want to try to find these items elsewhere. It just sucks.
Nobody is being blamed for jacking the price and there is no reason for anyone to apologize. Some folks just have way more money to burn than I and are willing to pay incredible amounts. I saw one with a starting bid of $800 once, you just never know. Insane to me but obviously reasonable to others. C’est la vie. It’s part of the hobby, it happened with Star Wars, too. $10 flash guns going for $150 such for lightsabers, etc.
i can see everyones point on this thread, except this: why is it ‘taboo’ to post post about an auction that is not your own? i would think the intent would be honest 99% of the time around here. i ask because i am confused about it., i have been here a while, but still have alot to learn. that’s why im asking.
Sometimes it seems I forget how vast and populated the internet really is. I guess I’m still kinda naive like that. It never crossed my mind that I was screwing another person of this board (D’uh!) when I talked about that auction. When it got too expensive for me I just thought: “Meh, I may as well talk about it on the board. Maybe someone rich will be interested” That’s a mistake I will not make twice. Now that I think about it, it was pretty dumb. What else but a fast increase of the price could have come from my post. Live and learn, they say. I certainly did learn.
But I think PeteVenkman_Jedi wanted to make another point. I think he wanted to explain that people should use a little common sense when it comes to buying accurate stuff. Sometimes you should tell youself: “You know what? It’s not worth it. That thing is too expensive for what it is. It’s a minor detail. I could do almost as good for a third of this price. Let’s move on, shall we?” By not thinking ahead, I encouraged the opposite…I still think that ultimately people are responsible for what they do with their own money. But since I’m also saying you should use your head when buying those things, I should have done just that and thought before advertising an item I was myself already considering way overpriced.
I hope I’m making some sense… I could have come up with much better sentences in french but I think you all understand what I’m trying to say.

I know this community is all about sharing and I do my fair share of that but not everything needs to be spoon fed. People need to be able to find some things on their own, thats the whole fun of it. Think of it like a treasure hunt and when you search and search and finally find that “treasure” the reward is tremendous! I get that feeling everytime I find something rare or unusual at a garage sale or auction or even on Ebay. :lol: If someone simply gives you the “map” it’s too easy

The point about paying $$ for “uber-accurate” runs across all the prop boards. On TDH, a few of us use to talk about the 10% rule. A certain item, part, whatever is recognizable by 10% of the costumers. Of those 10%, only about 3% can recognize it at a glance. So, is it valid for to pay out $$$ for a part that just a few on the forum will know what effort you put into getting it?

If it’s the absolute last piece you need to make a screen-accurate outfit, most of us will bite the bullet, bitch about it, but buy it.
While it doesn’t apply to Ghostbusters, most of the time we’re happy if the general public knows what we are!
I remember being in a custom Mandalorian (Boba/Jango Fett) outfit and being called a Power Ranger!

If it’s the one that just closed… I failed to get that.
I had a snipe on it at $300 and STILL failed to get it.
My goal was to take a huge bunch of reference shots of it, and then make a plastic cast of it so people could have the right looking thing, but not pay through the nose for it (ok, so maybe the nixies might have been an issue, but still)
Ah well… I’m aiming for next year for my costume anyhow…

Haha, yeah those are a bit too pricey for me. I’d rather spend a third of that on a nice looking pack :D. That’s just me though, I’m sure it’s a fun piece for those upper class ghostbusters out there.
