Do we have free speech regarding someones proton pack?

Well my question is a fairly straight forward one, one that I hope I can get some feedback on, because it’s something that’s been picking at me for a good while now. My question is this…Is it okay to tell someone what you really think of their proton pack? For example if a pack is far from accurate, or is slopply looking in it’s build, are we allowed to say hey it looks sloppy, or man that thing is inacurate?

Because I fell like we are forced to blow smoke up people’s a$$es when we talk to them about there packs, and I personally feel like a more honest approach shouldn’t be frowned upon.

What are your thoughts on the matter, has anyone else felt this?

Sometimes it’s best to listen to Thumper: “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all.”

I know what you mean, protoman, but we all start somewhere, and for some it’s the best they can do. I personally admire anyone who has the tenacity and ambition to tackle building a pack. For some it’s easy, for others it’s very difficult. Just appreciate that we can all build packs, accurate or otherwise, and if it doesn’t suit your tastes, leave it be.

My two cents.

i hate seeing “its not movie accurate” when someone built their own pack, where cheers and jeers for lego packs are given at the drop of a hat. i dont think its right when someone worked very hard on a proton pack, and to feel like it doesnt stand up as they’re posting pictures of it to the dogs. in my opinion, if one thinks it sucks because it doesnt have the wire tie in the right spot or whatever ■■■■ things one would have, i think they should keep your lips doing their job by keeping teeth warm. and especially watch them pearlies when they blow smoke over someone inserting tab a into proton pack slot b.

alot of you, who buy your kits, and plug and play until your faces turn blue, seem to forget a very important person. norm gagon. with out this guy, you wouldnt be looking for light kits and mobos that someone else has already done the work for you.

norm, did the work for them. so they could build theirs.

ive taken it upon myself to post pictures of his first plans, 1996, where ever i see “inaccurate” or a question of accuracy, because this guy, made plans, when no plans existed. and maybe he didnt have the right gun mount, or those little squares on his spacer. but his heart was in the right place. his plans, are why you all have plans today. he just kept workin and reworkin them. he even worked with some people to name some parts that you all call ppds, and crank gens. and ion arms and n filters. then some other guy took his plans, and built a pack then wrote up his own plans.

point is, norms original plans werent accurate. and 13 years ago there wasnt any sort of question to his accuracy. but “how do i get one of my own?”

i wont use anyone’s plans but his, because his are fun. his are the epitome of ingenuity, resourcefulness, and ■■■■■ that those that took their time and are getting an inaccurate finger waved at.

how much of that am i wrong about. id really like to know.

personally Ill take feedback either way, I think its all in the delivery. no one is going to improve by saying it looks great when something is wrong.

*no you are not allowed to give your honest opinion about someones pack.

if you haven’t built one of your own from scratch, you have absolutely no right to critique anyones props, EVAR, regardless of how much you actually know about what you’re talking about.

how dare you provide your critiques and opinions on a project I have posted on a public forum!!*

this seems the general attitude of the building community . . .especially towards yours truly.

You see, I have no talent. It took no skill to put together my $1500 “model kit”. it took no talent to attach parts properly, finish, paint, and tweak to my satisfaction etc., my pack that I assembled with absolutely zero effort. I blow a gasket and label an elitist anyone who tells me anything is wrong with my pack because I know it’s perfect in every way and better than all other packs on the site. [/sarcasm]

personally Ill take feedback either way, I think its all in the delivery. no one is going to improve by saying it looks great when something is wrong.

exactly my point there, well put. And Kind I feel your pain too,

This is exactly the type of feedback I was looking for.

I think if we offer constructive criticism, then all should be fine…

No need in going all 501st on people ya know  Thats one reason why some people say “screw the 501st”…because there are too many elitist in the group…

To me the key is constructive feedback. I hate to see people just tear apart a pack and offer nothing other than talking about “movie accuracy”. A lot of us just aren’t that concerned about movie accuracy. For me, I’m going for the **feel** of the pack more than anything else. I’ll be accurate when I want to be, but I don’t feel like a slave to the films. In my mind each proton pack is a custom job anyways. They aren’t manufactured cookie cutter devices. There’s room for individuality.

That being said, if you notice something has been done slopily or a little slap-dash, then sure, speak up, but don’t be a dick. Suggest ways that the person can improve. Offer helpful tips or advice. If all you wanna do is say “Hey, you suck!” then you need to zip it because now you’re bringing nothing useful to the table. "Put up or shut up"as the saying goes.

you have the freedom to have a warm cup of shut the hell up!

–a ben stiller movie reference…please don’t be mad, I need people to like me.

Make one, then talk? lol :whatever:

Now you will go to sleep, or I will put you to sleep.Check out the name tag…You’re in my world now grandma. Love that movie unicorn, Happy Gilmore. Great stuff. I needed that.

I agree with everyone so far, I think as long as your not flat out bashing their work, then it’s okay to say hey your pack looks a little off to me or, hey that pack looks like it was rushed. that sort of thing, I’m not saying flat out bashing people. I’m just saying im not into kissing every rear end that makes a proton pack and acting like they deserve a prize, just because they made one. Although I do like to give credit where it is due too. so the door swings both ways i think.

Oh and Krenzy I’ve made 6 now, 3 from scratch, 1 funkzilla shell, 1 lovusmokey gen2. and one mike304 way back in the old days.

I think it’s like many of you have said, it’s all in the delivery. Nothing wrong with honest ,constructive comments.

Why judge what someone has made and wants to show off unless they ask for a critique or how they can improve it. People build to different budgets and styles and I guess the main thing is they are happy with it so why rain on their parade, at least they had the courage to show it.

There have been other threads on this subject if I recall and i think the same answers have come out. Personally if I want people to comment on something I build I ask for comments, if i posted a pic of a turd I would expect someone to come in and say it looks like shit

yeah, everybody seems to feel about the same…be considerate and constructive in your critiques, and offer helpful advice.

some of us are better at that than others, but that’s life in a public forum. most times when people want feedback on their packs they tend to ask for it, and are generally appreciative. but then again there are some who just can’t take any opinion that differs from their own…

but like grampa always said…there’s alwasy one ■■■■■■■ in a crowd…

Just don’t be THAT ■■■■■■■

As said, it is all about delivery. There is no need to lie to someone, but there is no need to be a jerk either. I think in most cases, unless you are a jerk or have some sort of connection with the prop maker in question, silence usually speaks volumes.

I agree, but some people cant take critcism very well constructive or otherwise, so I think in the end, like you stated Chicken, silence is the best course of action. If you don’t have somethig nice to say, Don’t say anything at all, seems to be the perfect fit for these situations it seems.

i too am of the mindset of ‘if you dont have anything good to say…’ but sometimes it is good to speak up. i remember a time not too long ago that i had a cake pan i was gonna use for my cyclo on my new build and a certain someone spoke up and spurred me into action on building my own cyclo…came out great, and with out a gentle nudge i’d have just been lazy and used the cake pan.

I just keep thinking back to our art critiques in college. If the piece sucked, there would be nothing but dead silence in the room as everyone, I assume, was thinking the exact same thing I was thinking; “Is there ANYTHING good I can say about this piece?” On the other hand, the better the piece, the more people talk, the more positive comments and negative criticisms there are.

As a Mod on another forum our policy has always been if they ask for constructive criticism feel free to indulge. If they’re just showing their work, feel free to ask questions, but if you have nothing good to say just keep it to yourself and move on.
