I was wondering if anyone out there does vacuform bumpers. I’m not big on the resin cast ones since they will crack and break if takes a good hit or bump. I was looking for something relatively inexpensive to use after structurally reinforcing it from the back. ABS plastic seems pretty strong so maybe something like at would work
In over a decade of frequenting this forum I’ve never heard of someone’s bumper breaking for any reason.
Over the years ive had wood bumper, resin and vacume shell.. The resin bumper has, not mounted, been tossed around in out of boxes. Once mounted i cant imagine it breaking. If you drop the pack and break the bumper, you probably broke something else.. Ive never seen a vacume bumper. Not sure if vacume bumper is practical. How ever there are templates you could cut yours out of plastic for cheap.. Just alot of work. Could ask about 3d printing them too. I dont know anything about 3d printing but im not sure if its any stronger then resin
Templates:
I can’t imagine the resin one breaking unless we’re talking a massive fall, like the pack coming off the frame and hitting the floor. If that occurs you’ll be looking at replacing more than just a bumper. They’re strong as hell and I would not be looking at vac formed ones, stick with a resin one.
There are a few people that have done them, but no one is currently offering one that I know of.
I’ll second everyone here, I could beat a resin bumper with a mallet and do little damage.
Wait, you’ve actually broken a resin one? Like Jack, I’ve never heard of that happening unless it was a videobob poorly cast piece. You should be fine with resin. I’d think vacuform would be even more flimsy and fragile. You could always make one from foam
I wish you lived closer I would just give you a bumper. I have vacuum formed 5 bumpers now and reinforced them with fiberglass. You can see my first one in the thread below I think they are looking pretty good I but I need to take some new pictures.
Wow bumper came out better than I thought…
I wonder what the weight difference is between a vacuum pack wood mother board +LEDs vs a regular full blown pack with speakers. I wore my pack once for three hours and never again
I will let you know soon hopefully
As a rough estimate I would guess 10-15lbs total including the wand (mostly 3D printed). I will also have electronics battery and speaker. I plan on wearing for more than 3 hours for multiple days in a row. I am really shooting for the AZ comic con in May this year and have put a lot of work in recently. I will be updating my thread soon I just haven’t been taking pictures.
15lbs is a lot and 95% of the people at a comic con can’t spot the difference… I can just see, instead of walking to school 2miles in the snow each way you’ll get old timers " In my day we didn’t have no vacuum pack, lithium and LEDs. We had to carry metal, car batteries and incandescent light bulbs"
Do you think that you could get a price to have one shipped? My zipcode is 13126. If you have several let me know how many you have. I need one for my pack and a couple more for some prototype scratchbuilds. Thanks.
