For a year now I have been trying to decide on building either a replica or my own version of an ecto. But I have come to a question that I’m not sure of what the answer is. After looking through a lot of the ecto’s everyone here has built, I started to wonder what car is left that I can make an ecto out of that no one else has.
My question to you all is, what is your opinion on more than one person or group using the same car to make an ecto? Do you really care? Do you think that it’s copying? Or… what ever else you may think. I am quite curious to see what the rest of this community thinks.
I have been pondering the same thing since the loss of my Ecto. I wondered if Boomerjinks would be flattered that someone copied his design, of course a few modifications to the roof rack area.
The die hards would always say be accurate as possible to the original, the inspired designs allows you to a bit more freedom in what you want to build, as long as you keep the spirit of the look intact.
We all have seen badly done Ectos and some that just took our breath away.
So, by asking this question, you actually asked a lot more to be insightful about.
I personally would strive to do my idea and inspired design to whatever I choose as a vehicle, but remeber all else, your car is for you, no one else.
There’s only so many cars in the world to choose from. Just add your own twist to it and you’ll be fine. We found several of the same model of our ambulance on ebay and certainly wouldn’t care if someone else used one too.
I still don’t want to accidentally step on someone’s toes. Like, I’ve thought of using a Suburu Outback for an ecto, but then I saw the Denver group use it. And that brings me back to the original question. Would they even care that I also used that car, would they think I’m coping them, would they be flattered or send me a nasty letter.
Unless you buy the car especially to make an ecto vehicle, nobody would care. Even then, if you happen to get some minivan that happens to be the same as someone else’s ecto, is it copying them?
My point of view is that we’re all in the same boat here. Making this for fun, and trying to enjoy it. As long as the vehicle does justice to GBs I fail to see who would complain.
