OK, I have searched and searched and searched some more. On the forums people say that they use epoxy, which is fair enough. I am familiar with epoxy. People have given brands, but not types. I figured that there would be one that says it bonds to fiberglass and resin, well no such luck. I tried Lowes and Michaels. The person at lowes sent me to the caulking so I think he has no idea what he was talking about.
I just want an epoxy that will set relatively quickly (granted I have a clamp so that is not necessary, but 5-10 minutes set should be good) and will work on fiberglass, resin, and pvc. Please if you say “Use loctite brand” then please specify the type that you used. Same with liquid nail. I do not really like liquid nail though and it dries brown, or used to. I also do not remember there being so many different types of liquid nail either.
last thing i used was “Loctite quick set epoxy”. it is a two part liquid solution, and was used to bond my pvc injector tubes to the mdf power cell. worked like a charm.
i had tried two part epoxy putty for this on my last pack, but that didnt work. i would highly recomend this stuf though, it sets up in about 5 minutes, fully cured in 24hrs. good stuff.
it does say on the back:
'will not bond polyethylene or polypropylene products"
loctite is a good brand and super glue 30 minute set epoxy is great to both are very strong when cured, id go with Super Glue brand epoxy is cheaper and just as good.
I suggest the above and also get some JB weld, get the “Quick” stuff if they have it, it has an extra thick body so it doesn’t run like other epoxies and holds very well…
But on the package it says what it will bond to. Each has 5 or 6 items iirc. I am not sure what one to get as far as that is concerned. I saw alot of loctite brand epoxy at the store, maybe 4 or 5 different ones. As far as jb weld, i never have gotten that stuff to dry to anything more than a thick goo. I have even let it sit for a few days and still it was soft. I have some of the hard as steel putty stuff that I will use for welding and attaching the gun handle (unless I should use something else to attach the handle, but that appears to be what people are doing). I will have to go back to lowes to see what they have as far as quick setting epoxy. I do not remember seeing any super glue brand though.
And staticbuster, do you happen to have the epoxy handy to tell me the colour of the label? Not sure if that makes a difference, but the more characteristics to identify it the better.
ACE Quick Set Epoxy - sets in 5 minutes - works well with almost all surfaces.
I also used a plastic bonder epoxy by Power Poxy one time for my pack. Strong stuff, but it gave off a strong odor, even after it dried. It does go away after a few weeks. I used up that bottle and went back to using ACE.
Just get the general purpose epoxy, not the plastic or metal specific ones…
As for the JB weld get the quick stuff, the regular does take a long time to set, and if you look at the tubes one is labeled “hardener” mix a little extra of that into the blend and make sure it fully mixed…
I do not recall seeing a general purpose one, all of them had a list of things that it was for down the right hand side. I will have to check again when I am out. Lowes is about 10 miles away from me, so I would rather not drive out just to see what they have. Trying to nail down what to get now.
As for epoxy,I’ve used the Loctite quick set with success.Now i’ve got something called plastic welder(can’t remember the brand)Sets in 4 min. and is strength rated over 3000 psi.Even specifically says it works for PVC.
“Plastic Welder” made specifically for plastic… You don’t want this, unless it’s plastic to plastic bonds… It has etchants in it that eat into the plastic to form a better bond on plastic they serve no purpose on other materials…
“Metal Welder” aka “Liquid Metal” this is made for metal to metal bonds… So if you are gluing metal to metal this works but it’s not as good for general purpose…
And then you will generally see a “generic” 5 minute epoxy that has a list of things like, plastic, wood, metal, china fiberglass this is the all purpose one (probably the cheapest of all of them) it’s not tailored to any specific type of bond this is what you want for general purpose stuff… And you might also see a “flexible” all purpose one, this won’t hurt either as it will give a little under stress…
If you have a local dollar store check there most carry little tubes of generic 5 minute epoxy as well…
Ah ok. I was looking for one that did not show a list of things that it bonds to. No I got ya. There were about 10 different “generic” epoxies at the store, each with a different list of things on the side. Thanks for clearing this up.
