Figure Base Set (Shapeways)

I just finished up my 'Buster Base set on Shapeways.

Luckily, Shapeways just improved their colored Strong and Flexible materials. The red isn’t exactly Busters red, but it’s decent and makes a good base if you want to paint over it.

In doing this project I discovered that the Ghostbusters figures have somewhat odd quality control when it comes to the peg holes in their feet. The stands fit my Peter and Ray perfectly, but my Egon’s right foot peg hole is too small and my Winston’s left foot hole is too small. Feedback I got from a beta tester had Winston and Peter as the peg issues. The good news is that the plastic is easily shavable with a sharp knife. Better too tight that too loose I say.

Chedk 'em out here and let me know what you think.

And here’s the single.

You can see a bit of how pricing works on Shapeways here. Every file has a built-in a setup fee, so you save on bundled items. This stand fits Louis too, so if you guys want me to do a 5-er, I’m open to that. Let me know. It doesn’t fit peck, by the way.

NOTE- The second picture in the first post is the best representation of the bases actual color. I’d call it a cadmium red.

Will these fit all the RTBY/Courtroom guys also?

Also, any plans to make a Vigo one?

I don’t have any courtroom or RTBY figs, but my assumption is no. They look to be built on the same body as Peck, and his foot holes are much smaller than the uniformed Busters. The good news is that a peg that’s too big is easier to fix than one that is too small. If someone was really eager to make it work, they could trim or file the pegs down.

I have don’t have a Vigo, so I have no clue what size pegs he has. Unless I get to play with someone else’s, that’s a no. At least for now.

The variety of foot peg holes was a big surprise for me going in. I just assumed that they would all be uniform, and I could maybe even use the same measurements on my He-Man figs. No dice. He-Man’s pegs are actually smaller even though the figures are bigger. Apparently it’s all a big crazy free for all at Mattycollector when it comes to figure design.

I may have to invest in this set of 4 for my opened box set of gb2 figures. I just got a gigameter in today in frosted ultra detail, I must say i am very pleased with how it looks. pretty nicely detailed and with a coat of paint it will be perfect. Keep up the good work, hope to see some more customs from items from you.

Hey Servo!

Nice Stands you did! :nicejobyoudid: You are correct, there is no standard peg hole size for the Ghostbuster figures. From making my own, I can say that the GB2 set should work with the stands as do the Courtroom and RTB figures. Peck, Vinc and Vigo will need the pegs sanded down or the peg holes drilled out for them to use the stands.

Godgundam23- Thanks so much man! I’m glad you like it. I don’t even have one in FUD myself. I’m still rockin my Black Deatil one. I might have to trade up.

Capt! Courtroom and Ready to Believe’ will work? Awesome! Now, my Vince Clortho works perfectly on these. You say yours has the smaller holes? Facinating…

I have been considering a special one for Vince. I have one design with the circle with a key as the cross bar, and I’m considering doing one that’s a plain disc with a big keyhole. I’d like to get it in the Transparent Detail, but it’s so fudgin’ expensive. What do you think?

Well, being that your Vince works and mine doesn’t, let’s revise and say “your milage may vary” There is no standard peg hole for the figures.

I like your idea of the Key Crossbar for Vince, shouldn’t the Keyhole Stand be for Dana?

Not knowing anything about the process, how hard would it be to put raised lettering on the stands? and would it increase costs by much?

Raised lettering is actually a snap in Sketchup. There’s a tool for it right in the program. One of my original concepts was to do stands as the individual name badges. Since I’m still learning, I wanted to see if I could get these down first. I still might do it.

As for the keyhole, Dana doesn’t have foot holes, and I prefer to display her on her alter anyway, so I see the keyhole as being up for grabs. I can’t get a key design that I’m satisfied with so I’m trying this out-

As for cost, more material is more cost. I’m always surprised by how relatively little mass can add to the cost. This is why I think that for a lot of people, they use SW for prototypes for home casting. The Frosted Ultra prints beautifully, but I’ve heard it can be brittle, so it isn’t always the best for products that are going to get a lot of rough use., but makes for excellent casting duplication. It wouldn’t be worth it for me, since I’m just making these for myself and letting others buy them, but If I wanted to take a load of them to a show, I might pull my casting setup out of mothballs.

I just trimmed down a previous stand for Walter, and I’m painting another purple for Louis/ Vince.

Well, if raised letters add more cost, then recessed lettering should subtract from the price, right?

BTW I have an extra Peck figure head if you are still looking.

hey Tom, I haven’t bought anything yet, but I just wanted to say thanks for all this 3d model/printing GB stuff. It’s really cool stuff & and it’s great to watch you and the awesome Capt collaborate.

stands looking good, i think it’s great that the fans have a choice of stands now b/w you and Capt, two totally different looks but equally useful! One that’s ready to go and one for the creative/painter collector!

Exactly right on the recessed lettering. What did you have in mind?

And yes, I’m definitely interested in the Peck head. I’ll PM you.

I was just thinking about how Cap and I have nicely complimenting styles. He does the hand-crafted high end pieces, while I’m more of the mass-produced consumer-grade stuff. Sort of like Arts and Crafts versus Danish Modern for you furniture historians.

In the middle of painting atm actually, I actually like the clear plastic a bit more. Gives it a neat look having the ball on the bottom of the gigameter clear still instead of a solid black color. something bout the light shining through it gives it a more complete feel.

as for your vince stand, an actual key shaped base sounds better ( the whole keymaster thing and all). The keyhole for dana or a small “gate” shaped thing with a keyhole (being the gatekeeper). who knows, im fine with the standard GB ones =p

So to start I must apologize to Tom Servo, for taking so long to get this post up. I have been displaced with my landlord deciding that the bathroom needed remodeled, so my family has been staying with the in-laws.

But here we go now.

I apologize to the GBfans that look at this for the bad pics, shit is displaced and only had my phone. 8megapixel so not that bad but could have been better.

I asked Tom a few months back about the things that he sold on Shapeways.com. Which turned into me buying a set of figure stands and a few other goodies.

image

As of right now all I have opened are Peter and Winston. Peter has a stand, but has no problem moving from his original stand to the Tom Servo stand. Winston can stand without a stand but is more tipsy then a drunk slinky.

image

For now Peter is on his stand until I finish the new ones up. Winston has those wierd holes that didn’t fit either peg and both were off in size from each other. so I grabbed my drill with a 9/64th bit and just opened them up a little.

image

I think I could larger on e the holes and still fit, but right now they are tight and not at all loose.

I said before, sorry for the pics, but here is Winston on the stand. The only thing I have had a problem with is that Winston is all kinda tarded in the foot area. His left foot is curved in a bit and I need to heat it and bend it back. Nothing wrong with the stands at all.

image

I bought them in the Strong flexible white and I think that is perfect for many people. if you going to make a diorama you could paint them to match the floor, or red for a buster sign.

Take a look at Tom Servo’s other stuff too. The trap is awesome compared to the one that came with the Winston figure.

Goggles are very detailed and when I am back in my house I will get the trap and goggles painted and up on here.

Thanks for looking and maybe actually reading this.

ECTOVR6

Godgundam23- You might have convinced me. I might actually have to pony up for the best prints of my own stuff.

ECTOVR6- You’ve got nothing to apologize for, man. I’m glad those are working for you! My Ray has those wonky legs too. They’re annoying. Thanks again for ordering those! I’m eager to see everything all painted up.

Tom didn’t let me use his 3D file, so I designed and printed my own.

I like how they came out. Not as nice as Shapeways, but everything is pretty smooth.

they look like red cookies fresh out of the oven.

Sorry AJ, but you didn’t use the magic word.
