Burns, please take my advice and buy a Tru-Spec, you have my word that it will fit you better than the Rothco. I am a fat dude with man tits and a beer belly and I have owned both suits and the 3XL Tru Spec fits properly and comfortably in ALL AREAS, I wont go into other reasons why Tru-Specs are superior to Rothco because everyone is tired of hearing me talk about it and I’m sure you’ve already seen elsewhere on here the same argument. All I can say is that it will for you well.
If the no-ghost patch you ordered looks just like in the pic, Its black border would blend well on a black suit.
Like spooky said, the velcro on flightsuits, all flightsuits, is held on by stitching that is very easy to remove with scissors or a knife. Just snap a few of the stitches on each side and carefully pull the velcro off of the suit.
I will try them next after the upcoming 6x rothco. That store does not have rothco, otherwise I would do it. For 10, it is worth trying it on another size.
Bought the ecto goggles from home depot. I am nearly finished. I used this black plastic paint and it worked pretty good. About never got that stuff off my hands. At the moment, the lens caps are drying onto the wielding goggles. I just have to put the strap back on and eventually put on stickers (maybe). I’m using gorilla glue, so hopefully they stick the first time. The directions were pretty easy to follow. I just kind of messed up when I glued the clear lens to the goggles. I put on gorilla glue like I would super glue. It’s the white blob. I kept having to use a box knife to cut out the extra and smush it down. Kind of worked out great. It made the lens caps and glass look wielded to the goggles. I used two of the white knobs. One on the left (painted black) and one on the bottom for the battery cap. I cut off one of those mouth caps of a bottle to kind of make the string for the cap. I used a metal cabinet knob instead since it looked better and modern. Just got to let it dry and find stickers.
I ended up buying some 1/2 inch clear plastic tubing for the leg hose. I put it together with the female leg hose coupler and the screw tightener and it worked great. Now I am just waiting on my suit to come back. Should be about two wednesdays from now if I had to guess. Really depends on if my stuff is in stock and how quick their return department is.
I finished the goggles. Pictures below. For my first prop and first time with the materials it is not bad. I may do a second coat later since I misjudged the drying time after 6 hours. Only a finger print or two inside the goggles. Got this plastic paint on my hands and took FOREVER to come off. Also, I seriously misjudged the gorilla glue and it became a white blob mess around the glass rim. It kind of worked out great since it looks like it was wielded on. I followed norms plans, plus added an additional cabinet knob and piece of a mouth guard on a cup to make a batter storage location on the bottom left of the goggles. Sorry for the picture quality. Took picture with my palm Centro.
You should have gotten your money back and bought a Tru-Spec from somewhere else. I can almost guarantee that you will not be happy with the 6X Rothco. Please listen to me, I’m trying to help you. I have had the personal experience and have read and seen enough on here to know what im talking about.
Rothco suits have such bad tailoring that I have considered writing the company and telling them in detail of mine and others experiences with finding a comfortable fit/decent looking flightsuit.
Yeah, I meant to say they do not have tru-spec. I almost did get the tru-spec, but I am still concerned about the chest size. I measure exactly 51" “tight” all the way around my chest at the arm pits. The 3xl only has a chest size of 54". You add a shirt underneath and a pack on my back and that could be one tight suit. I was going to try the rothco again as it has a bigger chest size at the 6x than the 3x rothco. If the rothco does not fit I will buy the tru-spec or nomex. I found somewhere a little cheaper after shipping. Not much, but a little.
They have it for $39.99 and about $6.25 shipping. That is for a black and/or khaki tru-spec flight suit in size 3x. Cheaper for smaller sizes.
I got my patch finally from thailand. That was a joke. It had some pulled threads making loops on the ghost’s right arm. Also, there was some cut threads by the right eye so it looked pretty ugly. The other issue I had with the patch was the white part of the ghost had dirty thread and didn’t look clean. The guy wanted me to mail back the $1 and $3 shipping patch back to Thailand. I threatened to contact paypal and he issued a refund. I bought a gb 2 style patch from intergalactic on ebay. Please note: I would be cautious when buying the gb 1 patch from patchspicy09 as I had issues and my envelope was in perfect condition. I think it was a flaw during creation. Kind of easy to overlook as it slightly blends into the white, but I am not going to sew on a torn patch.
I also tried a 3XL Rothco and quality was subpar. I am expecting a 3XL Tru-Spec to arrive this week as well.
I’ll let ya know how it’d go. I also got a correct belt that needs to be dyed, actually two of them and took them to a tailor to have them sewn together.
Hopefully I won’t be wearing the Tru-Spec for a long time. I’ll start dieting and exercising so I’ll be able to fit a 52 Nomex I have lying around. It’s a tight fit in my belly (for now). I am getting ready to run the half mile Disney marathon in January (that’s 13.2 miles), so I think I’ll be able to fit in it by next year comfortably.
Well, I got my Rothco. It is very workable. Chest and waist is perfect. I can sit down without getting a wedgie. The only real issue with the measurements is with the arms and legs. They are about 4-5 inches too long and about 4-5 inches too wide. However, that is a good thing. I will tuck the extra leg fabric into my boots. I bought the roomy leather bottom and canvas top boots exactly for that purpose. As for the arms. That basically gets corrected with a proper placement of my elbow pads. Last night I removed the velco off the front. Took a little bit of time, but I didn’t damage the suit. I put on kattara’s name patch. I used this fabric tape to stick it on and then I used some black thread to sew on around the inner outline of the patch. I got my gb 2 patch earlier this week. It is perfect. It has an iron-on transfer on the back and I ironed on the gb 2 patch.
Question! I know sewing is always safe, but have any of you guys have issues with just ironing on the ghost patch and leaving it like that or did you all just sew it on? Just asking as the colors change around the edge and it would be a pain and take a while to sew that baby on. Would have to sew under the patch.
Tonight, I will get all dressed up and try it out. I bought some of those mountain climber clips. One will have this black canvas with key ring on the end to hold the gun on my right side. The other mountain clip will hold my goggles on the left. I also have some black gloves. (Will probably buy a new pair and I got the slightly stiff pvc black gloves. I saw some black rubber gloves at walmart for cheap last week, but they end had this fabric with white and black strips. I could cut that part off with a paper cutter at work so I have a clean edge.) I will also have the hose with new type of attachment style shown above. My elbow pads are franklin and not exactly screen accurate, but they do the job. Plus, my Mom did not exactly like me dying clothes.
Don’t iron the patch on. If you ever change size, have to wash the suit, or decide to upgrade or swap to something else, you’re stuck; the iron-on backing also doesn’t always hold, and if it peels off or is moved, it leaves ugly backing behind.
It’s not hard to sew the patch on. Just get some red thread and some black thread and stitch one section at a time; takes about 20 minutes and you’re done.
Jairus is absolutely right about the iron-on patch advice- I concur.
As far as sewing your patches on being a ‘chore’- Just take it to a seamstress. EVERY town has one and if you can’t find one usually your dry-cleaner has someone they use. I got my patches sewn on for $8 ($4 each) total. I dropped them off in the morning and my seamstress said I could come back and get them that afternoon.
She used black and red thread accordingly:
AND she even used a khaki thread for the inside!!!
While the inside thread color doesn’t matter much, it’s a nice touch that a true professional thought to do. Seamstress’ make a living sewing buttons back on, taking in pants/skirts, heming, and patching. Support your local community, it’s only $8 afterall and in my opinion: Money well spent.
Well, curse word. It took me three nights to sew it on. One night to do the name patch for about an hour. One night to sew the red part for about an hour. Then last night for about an hour the black part. The arm patch was really irritating me. I kept sewing a part of the sleeve and would have to cut the thread and start over. Not to mention how many times I poked my stupid fingers. Worth it now. I sewed it by hand so it is not machine quality on it, but I sewed a tiny stitch. The iron on would not have worked. The stupid two fingers were attached at the beginning, but then started to peel off. You definitely need to sew this patch on.
