I read once that in an early draft he was a combination of entities. Not just one specific dead guy, but a bunch of people, and a product of occult ceremonies done at the hotel.
LandoSystem - On Making Ghostbusters page 64, one of the annotations is a quote from Dan Aykroyd stating Slimer is as “a vapor - a kind of confluence of stored up psychic energy, an accumulation of spirits that haunt the hotel who doesn’t want to leave.”
The ‘side effect of cult rituals’ was from Ghostbusters: A Frightfully Cheerful Roleplaying Game, p.3 (Reference File C).
