GBFans Soundboard Dead Already? (Resolved)

Hey Guys,

I think my soundboard (first or second run) may be dead but am not sure. I took it out only once before when I got it and it worked perfectly. I’ve got the two GBFans lights kits in and decided to wire it all up last night to give it a test run and to start planning how to mount the boards and everything.

After connecting the two lights kits and power (9v battery) to the soundboard, both light kits turn on, but I hear no sound and the red power LED on the soundboard is not illuminated. There are no burned areas on the board and I don’t notice a burnt or burning smell when powered.

Anyone have some advice for troubleshooting?

Thanks!

Joe

Have you PMd spongeface?

No I hadn’t… did he make the board?

Yes as far as I’m aware. I know the recent runs were.

He’s about the best electronics expert we gots. Lol

Ah well then! Sounds like he’s my knight in shining solder. Thanks for the direction Hoot!

I’ll post back here with any information he may provide in case it might help others in the future.

I think the system with sound needs 12v to run correctly. Check the documentation.

Just checked and it said 9-14v.

While it is certainly possible the soundboard is dead…

One single 9v battery is not going to power your soundboard, and two light kits for more than a few minutes before the battery is dead. (Or until the battery cannot supply enough power to the sound board).

Yeah on average during my build my el cheapo 9V lasted a max of five minutes per battery. I’d highly recommend purchasing a battery similar to what AJ offers in shop, he may still have some in there.

Keep us posted please, my all three of my GBfans kits are still in their boxes, untested since I am not up to that part of the build yet.

I recently managed to somehow fry my soundboard, but spongeface offered to look it over and was able to effect a very economical repair and ship it back to me within one week of me murdering the poor thing. It was a bright spot to my Hallowe’en preparations, hearing my pack make noises again.

I would recommend investing in a more powerful battery for a lights/sound/speaker configuration. I think it was R2DEVO who steered me to the blue-brick via eBay, and I got it for a really good price although it took forever to arrive from China.

You might also want to hook your soundboard up to a new 9volt battery all by itself to see if the power light comes on, before deciding to take any further steps.

Alex

Agreed on the better battery. I was just using the 9v temporarily to see everything working and get an idea how many/length of wires I’ll be dealing with. Long-term solution is to get one of the blue boxes from the shop or eBay.

Spongeface did get back to me with some initial steps to look over which I’ll be trying tonight.

Just to back up and expand on what Alex said, Sponge really is great when it comes to assisting so talk to him to see what’s up. Also, the blue brick battery from Ebay is a great alternative. If you need something between now and when it arrives (it takes a while), you could get an 8 battery holder with AA batteries(for a total of 12V) and wire that in. I’ve been using that for a few events/Halloween and get a decent amount of life out of it (2-3 days).

An example of the blue brick 12V batteries. I chose the 9800mah (around $40) but they make a lesser one too.

The 9800 battery is also what I sell in the GBFans Shop.

Its quicker to buy from a US seller, but I’m currently out of stock.

I just ordered 2 of them from Deal Extreme. Hope that’s ok to say. I would have bought it from the GBfans store but apparently it can’t be shipped from the US to Canada for who knows what reason.

Well, I’ll be damned. Is that new or am I blind? I got referred to ebay for mine last month and actually paid a bit more. Oops.

I tried too to buy one from the GBfans site, but was told the same thing. Good to see there are other options from ebay. Which is where I got mine for about $33 shipped, so Deal Extreme is a bit cheaper. Let me know how it turns out.

I had mine shipped directly from china. 13 business days.

Dunno the reason behind the inability to ship to Canada. I imagine there is a Customs issue. If the sellers could inbox me as to why from USA to Canada, I will gladly research the issue at work tonight in regards to Customs.

Maybe originally it was in regards to USPS banning Lithium batteries from International shipping.

But according to this article they now ship again since November/12 of last year.

So don’t think there should be any issues.

Excellent news for the store and Canadians.
