Very excited about this news! I had been hoping that the box office sucess of Afterlife would lead to a new animated series. Weather it is Ghostbusters: Ecto Force, or a new idea from Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan I am looking forward to seeing it when it premiers.
I couldnāt disagree with this more. We absolutely should be telling Sony what we want to see. Will they listen? Probably not. This will probably be a reboot & much like they found out in 2016ā¦thatās not what most fans want to see.
Extreme Ghostbusters is awesome. It sucks you donāt view it as canon, but it is. Itās a damn good show. Try giving it another chance maybe?
And I think if you were to poll fans and ask them: Would you rather a continuation of the RGB continuity or a Rebooted series, youāre dreaming if you think most wouldnāt go for the former. Iām sure there are some who want a fresh start, but I donāt. Why?
Iām a character person more than an idea person. Ghostbusting as an idea just isnāt all that special. What makes it work is the characters. And the characters in RGB and EGB are terrific. I want to spend time with them. I want to see more adventures with them. That doesnāt mean we canāt see new characters. Of course we can.
But rebooting is a bad idea when you have a huge tapestry of awesomeness to pull from.
Will they be chasing a younger audience? Maybe, maybe not. Itās 2022. Itās well understood by now that animated series are not made for only children. Need I remind the jury of the controversial He Man continuation by Kevin Smith? That was Netflix. It was a continuation of a continuity of an animated series from the early 1980s. That got made! Now will the stupid toxic fan response to that series make Netflix nervous about doing some similar with GB? Perhaps.
But Jason & Gil are just the right age to have an RGB fondness(Iām one of those weirdos who thinks EGB is the superior show. And it is, minus the animation)
Hell. They still make RGB Toys!
So come on Netflix! Donāt make the wrong move. Keep this in the continuity. Donāt follow GBAās footsteps and have Egon dead.
Itās actually pretty amazing that GB has an animated continuity. Do you know how rare that is? Itās pretty cool and pretty forward thinking by the people who made EGB.
Just so long as they donāt do that god awful sounding āEcto forceā.
Exciting news. 
Whatever animation format style is or whatever they take the story as long as itās written well, it would be great to see them stay true to the the Ghostbusters formula and at the same time give it a lot of āfreshnessā for storytelling.

Despite itās hiccups and flaws, I donāt really have a problem with streaming as a medium for television just a long as the technology improves overtime; what you said about the positives of streaming is āexactlyā why iām all for it if it gives the creative freedom creators need without restrictions. Itās no longer the 20th century anymore in terms of broadcast television and streaming has changed the paradigm of the television industry and how we produce content for television.
With todayās announcement of a new GB animated show on GB Day, I say we have to take what we can get.
I donāt think this new animated show āhasā to be directly in canon with RGB/EGB (would be great if it was in some way), but I am satisfied with what IDW has done with it by having different and separate GB universes coexisting as dimensions in one continuity with the Prime universe as the main GB universe. This new announced GB show can be yet another dimension in a long line of other different GB universes/dimensions with itās own designation name like in the IDW comics.
I think we can all agree that Dan Schoeningās art style is the way to go forward. that style in itself is pretty much a schoo in.
I agree thereās are too many streaming services but I think Netflix is one the few that deserves to be around. It started it off and is not studio specific which are not worthy of an entire streaming service (Maybe Disney+ is. I donāt have it though).
I have Netflix and coming this year is Sonic Prime. I know this is not but having Sonic and Ghostbusters together makes me so happy. 2 of my all time favorite things.
The only concerns I have with Netflix is what feels like a quick-to-cancel practice with their programs and the recent news items about projects and people being axed following that one veteran being pushed out of the company.
Ya Iāve heard others say they cancel things too easily. I havenāt really noticed because I mainly use it for movies but there are some shows I wanted to see. Have not read about anyone getting pushed out.
Hard agree. Though, even if the announced animated GB show doesnāt use Schoeningās style, then it can be used for another GB animated show if itās announced in the future, someday.

At GB Day, Gil and Jason only said the series will delve in an unexplored era and decade of canon, new characters, new places, in the future. Idk, sounds like Ecto-Force to me.
Based on the iffy quality of GBA Iām not sure Jason & Gil are the right people to be the āKevin Feigeā of the GB Universe. Itād be nice to have more comedic writers involved. Itās so weird that there is now a GBU. We went so long with no new Ghostbusters stuff and now we are going to be really seeing this franchise stretch her legs. Should be interesting times ahead. Iām sure this fan base will face this new era with all the [clears throat] dignity, patience, acceptance and goodwill that itās known & (in)famous for!
But I must lament the fact that Ghostbusters use to be a comedy franchise and these two have never written a comedy. So I guess we can just kiss the comedy part of ghostbusters goodbye and itās now just another high concept sci fi property. Well done Sony. Well done. Huzzah.
It sounds like Dan isnāt involved at all in Ghost Corp anymore, or is he? From his little appearance in that bit it seems like heās taken a step back. I wish Sony would trust him more and find him a great co writer to act like Harold/Ivan. Bringing the best out of his imagination/comedic sense while tempering his moreā¦āout thereā ideas. At least get him involved in the story aspect. You have the guy who wrote/co wrote Blues Brothers, Ghostbusters 1 & 2, Spies Like Us, Dragnet & Coneheads! Not to mention years of work on SNL.

Maybe Iām in the minority here, but Iām simply not a fan of his style. He is talented, to be sure, but I for one could never get into the IDW comics, largely because of that style. Itās too cartoony and exaggerated for my taste, as is modern animation in general. I never understood why the culture moved away from the old school 80ās style of animation ā which was generally more realistic, in terms of human proportion ā in favour of the more childish designs where proportions are wildly exaggerated, almost like Picasso paintings.
Even in the case of Extreme Ghostbusters ā which I love ā I wish they had used a more realistic style, instead of the angular and āextremeā style they did.

I disagreed with you yesterday but Iām going to cautiously agree here, with the caveat I am optimistic and happy weāre getting any new Ghostbusters stuff at all.
When you look at the ingredients for GB I & II, Ramis and Murray were the comedy - and theyāre gone - Aykroyd has lots of wild creative ideas that need steering and editing, Ivan Reitman grounded the concept and crafted an all-time classic movie out of it. In contrast Gil & Kenan are fans, and I feel like so far weāve seen the fan service version of how to continue this franchise and donāt get me wrong, I loved and appreciate Afterlife on repeated viewing, but Iām also conscious of the things that movie *nearly * could have been, which would 've tipped it over the edge into āclassicā status for me.
The cartoon does sound like Ecto Force because they mentioned the future and Iām curious what excites them about the conceptā¦ they can go wild with some of the tech and action? I hope they go for a retro-future aesthetic, that would work. If itās hover vehicles and too scifi that would feel far removed from the original concept. Thereās a bit of a contradiction here with what fans want because some of us are screaming for fresh takes, and the animated stuff does seem like it will be a new spin rather than derivative of the originals, and then we complain! But given they could revert back to the four guys in animation quite easily and figures like Straczynski and some of the OG RGB voice cast are still around, I just wonder what the arguments against some sort of RGB revival set in the 80ās were, or if the new series will understand and recapture what made RGB special (the character driven elements). I am open-minded but there seems to be a lot of pitfalls with the concept.
Was the slide with the Slimer āNo Ghostā logo in relation to the series or the animated movie? Did anyone get a screengrab?
I have similar concerns about the pedigree for the animated movie, because Brenda Hsueh is a Kate Dippold style pick, the script was the biggest weakness of ATC. She is a fresh voice and I liked How I Met Your Mother well enough. Melissa & Joey was a turkey (though that could largely be levelled at MJH). It could honestly go either way. A shame the Lord & Miller pitch didnāt work out (alternatively fans may not have liked their direction, itās just theyāre a big name at the moment). Prynoski and Kluska I know very little about either but they seem to have worked on some decent projects.
So I agree with Richardlessā post mainly about failing to capitalize on existing talent involved in the original movies and animated series. I am confident I will consume and enjoy every one of the Ghostbusters products Ghost Corp is putting out, BUT I just get the feeling that Jason & Gil arenāt necessarily going to listen to any of the critical feedback from Afterlife and weāre going to get more of the same pacing, callbacks, fan service, this time with the firehouse, Slimer (I would actually like Slimer to be in the movie in an RGB capacity), maybe Moranis and shudder (please, no)ā¦ VIGO. :sigh:
Soā¦ I wouldnāt say Jason and Gil are the wrong people to head the Ghostbusters Universeā¦ in fact with their writing and directing talents and clear understanding of what makes the franchise work I think they are perfectly placed to lead itā¦ but the peripheral names I see associated with the various projects donāt have the same writing chops, comedic muscle or paranormal enthusiasm that Iād associate with Murray, Ramis, Aykroyd, Straczynski.
To me, it kind of feels like Sony and Ghost Corp know they have a baseline of white whale consumers in us fans. Because realisticallyā¦ weāre buying into all of this stuff regardless. And so there is a budget limit, and the talent involved reflects that budget limit, so itās about giving fresh talent a chance to make a name for themselves via the Ghostbusters IP, which is totally fair. But it would explain why weāre not gettingā¦ eg. Taika Watitiās Ghostbusters. And in some respects I understand and am fine with that if it means we get new Ghostbusters content for the next few years. I justā¦ out of all of it, I REALLY hope Afterlife II is a project which takes a step away from callbacks and fanservice and delivers something denser and funnier, perhaps the cast will feature some additional comedic talent this time.
Side note: If we donāt hear more from the Illfonic game in the next couple of weeks (old E3 window) Iād maybe start to be concerned about it hitting a 2022 release date based on the assumption it would aim for a Sept/Oct release and Ghostbusters Day was the perfect time to drop a new trailer. Unless theyāre a part of Microsoftās showcase (unlikely) or just want to spread out announcements.
Theyāre producing the show rather than writing itā¦ Thereās still time and room for the comedy side to be honoured.

Itās not like there isnāt a few noteworthy precedents for successful Ghostbusters installments that donāt have Danās direct involvement inā¦ I love Dan for what he gave us, but other people have proven they can successfully carry on the legacy he started.
