Heatsink help..

Any help would be appreciated. Building my first pack this year. The proton wand heat sink has been giving me fits. I’ve been looking for ideas as to how to build a solid one, but I’m not having much luck. “Best” idea I’ve found is using coffers stirring sticks glued to a piece of thin board, but I’m worried about its durability. Any good suggestions?

We used the stirrer method, and ours have survived more then a year now, and 5 events.

Just attach it in such a way that you can replace it with womething more accurate and durable later, if you choose to.

Layers of plastic sign is what I used to make mine - http://throwingchicken.com/props/protongun07.html

Popcicle sticks could also work well

Popsicle sticks would probably be the correct thickness and the most durable.

I built mine out of basswood though. I used 1/16" basswood for the fins. Between them I put square basswood dowels. And I used one solid piece of basswood sheet for the bottom. Because the 1/16" basswood fins are so short, they’re pretty durable. I can’t guarantee they won’t break if you drop the gun, but if you drop the gun you’re more likely to shatter the acrylic tip I’d imagine, so don’t drop the gun!

Popsicle sticks are made out of hardwood, so if they’re the right height then they’d be a better choice for the fins themselves than the basswood, but the rest would be fine as basswood.

Basswood is found in craft stores.

That’s actually an awesome idea. I can see how the square dowels in-between the fins will strengthen the fins and give them a better chance of standing up straight and staying there. Thanks for all the ideas everyone.

Instead od going through all of that I just went on ebay and got 10 generic black ones for 14 bucks free shipping. In fact I have some of them left over if you want to work something out for em. Send me a message, ill gladly send you one or two. its about 1/4" smaller than the movie ones. Also sticks right onto your gun securely with no gluing.

I found an aluminum CPU heatsink and drilled a couple holes right down the spaces between the raised areas. Got an old abandoned Motherboard you can pillage?

I’m checking with the MIS people at work now…

Thanks that’s a very generous offer. The only thing I’m worried about is it getting her by halloween. I’m going to be out of town the 3 days prior so my work time when I return is going to be very limited.

If you know someone with a band saw you could take a small, thick piece of wood and do what we did. You take the wood and slide the piece in and out until you have several small strips. Hope this makes sense.

i sort of did the same thing as the band saw idea, but i used my skill saw instead.

i started with a 3/4" thick piece of wood. first i rounded over the edges with an orbital sander. next i set the saw depth to 1/2", and made a pass every other 1/16". what you end up with is 1/16" fins. then just cut the piece to size, sand prime, paint, glue. not too bad, i think it took all of 15 minutes to fashion:

If you have a good table saw, it works perfectly. that’s how I made mine.

Too bad it seems to be near impossible to find out what the heat sinks came out of.

Unless someone isn’t willing to share (o_0)

yeah, a table saw would have been much better. it was kinda hard to make sure i made each cut level. i got off on a few of the cuts and went too deep. overall it turn out good though. but a table saw would be best. that’s actually how i cut the grooves into my bumper…too bad my carpenter buddy moved to texas, his shop was awesome.

Pair of black heatsinks sent out this morning. Hope you get them in time for halloween man. Hell, some of the stuff I ordered recently got here within 3 days from all over the country.

Thanks! I’ve been watching the mailbox. I sent you enough ribbon wire to do your 2 packs on Saturday morning. Sent it priority mail so you should have it Tuesday or Wednesday.
