Thank you for sharing this, I was half way thinking I would need to talk to a leather maker in order to make a holster for mine. Should have looked more thoroughly through my hardware store.
This is CLOSE to being both the black leather design, and replication of the Craftsman style.

and here is how to dye it How to Dye Leather | ehow
We saw both the black and natural leather craftsman tape measure holders today. (The Kmart one linked earlier is the same as the Sears one.) They just didn’t look quite as nice as the first nylon one linked in the thread here, so we opted for those.
That said, the nylon ones are not the best assembled thing on earth. (For the price thats to be expected, I think.) If you can check them out in the stores, do so. Some have crooked or mis-aligned rivets, or rivets not centered properly in the bottom strap ends.
The sears site will tell you how many are on hand in your local store. It reported there were only 4 here, but we actually found 6 or 7, and picked up the 5 best ones for us and freinds who wanted them if we scored them while out today.
I’m gonna recommend against dying those as some dyed leather accessories like my radio and belt gizmo holsters have stained my flightsuit. The dye tends to rub off if you don’t seal it perfectly.
I saw one of these at lowes on a hunt for a temp holster and it fits fairly nice in it with a added strap around it its perfect matches the gizmo holder better to me

Instead of dying leather, you can use black acrylic paint, or even black shoe polish. (The botteled liquid kind.)
The shoe polish takes several coats, so I prefer the black acrylic paint.
Something tells me that shoe polish is going to rub off worse than dye. Dye bonds with leather where polish just coats it.
The liquid stuff has a sealer in it I think. At any rate, we used it on our belt fobs without issue. I checked, and I actually didn’t color the backs of our belt gizmos at all with any colorant, since you can’t see it anyway once on.
Better safe than sorry though using acrylic paint if you are not sure, or just leaving the back natural. Odds are, you could probably use spray paint as well, since I’ve noticed a lot of licensed leather wallets now have completely printed images on them. (The stay puft wallet looks like a standard magazine 4 color print process, unless the source image was just badly scanned from a previously printed image, opposed to the original artwork.)
Got this and my pke yesterday. I didn’t cut the top leather strap though. Insted I wraped it around the back and then snaped it on. This gives it a snug holster feel. Ill post pics later.

kiwi shoe polish worked great for me take a fine grit sand paper and rough it up and it takes the dye alot easyer
Know what’d work well?
