I don’t like explaining it away with a “force field”. That’s no better than explaining it with magic. So I will explain it with physics. 
The proton pack fires a stream of positively charged particles, which electrically charge the ghost when the beam strikes it. The trap generates an equally strong negatively charged electrical field with electrons. Opposite charges attract, and so when the trap is opened, the ghost is drawn into the unit.
the idea is that the ghost is already negative - that’s why you can hold it in place with the proton stream.
It would only make sense to have another positively charged field, when you release the ghost it will be attracted by that positive field as well.
I always wondered what happens if the ghost isn’t a malicious one, and is not negatively charged…

Negatively charged has nothing to do with it’s “emotion.”
As Ray says in the movies the Ionization is mostly constant for all Ghosts. Ghosts are composed of more electrons than compared to protons or nuetrons, this composition is what makes them negatively charged.
Since the ghosts are negativelt charged this is what makes the proton packs the best weapon, the proton pack fires a condensed stream of protons being kept in some kind of line by a small stream of electrons, since the proton beams is trying to even it’s molecular charge it is attracted to the negatively charged ghost.
This attraction is why when a proton beam is fired at a ghost is almost always directly connects, or even tried to bend or bow to connect(ex. Peter and Egon snaring Onion Head in the Sedgwick) , it’s also why proton beams are so wild and unwieldly when fired at nothing (ex. Egon fireing and missing Onion Head and thusly demolishing the desert table).
The ghost trap is a Electronegativity charged device, which attracts electrons (which if we remember are what ghosts are mostly composed of) when the trap is activated a cone of electronegative energy is released which in turn tracks the ghost into the box, when the pedal is released (or pressed again) the doors close cutting off the electronegative field. The generation of the field is why you need to shut down a particle stream right as the trap open or the proton stream has nothing to attract it any more and will just fire into whatever it wants.

The principle is that as its drive reaches infinite improbability, the trap passes simultaneously through every conceivable and non-conceivable point in every conceivable and non-conceivable universe (in other words, when one activates the Infinite Improbability Drive, the trap is literally everywhere at once). It is then possible to decide at which point you actually want to be when improbability levels decrease.
