How to ... Belt Gizmo

Hi,

I want to share my experience building a Belt Gizmo with you.

The Gizmo will be bulit around these instructions/measurements

http://jairuswhitley.com/download.html

Downloaded the Gizmo “GB1 Hero Belt Gizmo Circuit Board” and the “GB1 Hero Tape Measure Holder Pattern”.

Printed the “GB1 Hero Tape Measure Holder Pattern” on self adhesive paper and on paper (as template), the Holder just on paper.

I used 2mm Polystyrene, which can be easily cut with an Exacto knife. First I used scissors to cut out one board, put it on the polystyrene, marked all the corners and started cutting using a ruler and the knife. Need 4-5 good cut to get through. Hold the knife vertically, otherwise the edges get slanted.

Then I sticked the self adhesive picture (roughly cut out) onto the polystyrene board, firmly pressed it on and then, again using the exacto knife, trimmed the excess. Using a black felt pen I covered up the edges which were not 100% aligned.

For the IC’s I cut strips of plastic out of the board and glued two each together to give it suitable hight. These will be sanded, so the edges look nice.

Well, while typing this … how do I upload pictures of my work?

Best regards,

F.

You have to use an image hosting website/service. Post the link using the image embedding. Looking forward to seeing your gizmo.

OK, thanks for the hint.

Here are the first 3 pictures:

what I did earlier (2 weeks ago): bought a piece of black leather (2,0mm thick, that’s “5 oz.” leather). Printed the template on paper, put the paper on the leather an traced the outline more or less freehand with a ballpen. That leaves enough of a trace on the leather to be able to see where one has to cut.

Cutting 5 oz. leather is really very easy with a sharp exacto knife. I punched the ends of the belt slots with a 5mm hole punch, and then cut the parallels.

The push button lower part is a 13mm pushbutton (1/2 in.). The pushbuttons came with tools to set them in place. I did this in a bench vise. To get the “folds” into the outer part, I put them on a sharp edge of the bench vise and softly hammered them with a rubber hammer into their new shape. Seems that the leather remembers this and stays in that shape. Don’t hammer too hard, otherwise the leather will get cracks and rip.

Then I took 10mm rivets (circa 3/8 in.) and again used the bench vise to press them together (I had the wooden shoes/jaws ?) on the vise grips to not scarr the rivets. Worked fine.

Here are the pictures:

Seems to fit perfectly:

Rest of the leather went into keyfobs and a piece is reserved for a trap holder (in the far future - I’ll keep you updated)

please stay tuned! work in progress!

today I mail-ordered all kind of electronic stuff, condensors, resistors, plugs, cables, etc.

Next steps planned:

  • paint IC’s black, attach stickers

  • paint edge of board in pcb-board-brown

  • wires under the white IC’s

  • hotglue the IC’s in place

  • apply and fix various electronic parts to board

No clear idea yet on how to build the tubes … maybe ballpen housings, or drippers, or …

little deroute … why order one by one and pay so much freight? So I planned for the Ghost trap also and made a looooong list of stuff to buy. Finally stuff arrived and next steps ahead.

While waiting for the parts to arrive, I also layouted a fake circuit board for the daughterboard. I found a cheap supplier at ebay (Germany) who makes boards, so 4 daughterboards cost only 14 EUR (3,50EUR each).

And they look gorgeous! Like real

If somebody is interested, here’s the layout. Scale it wide=90mm height 120mm (one board is 45x60mm)

here are the boards:

aaaaand here is the daughterboard:

Very nice on the daughter boards!

Great stuff! Looking forward to seeing more of your gizmo build.

going on…

“board” with wires fiddled in

image

populated the board with some parts

image

as it is no real board with copper plating, I can only solder the wires of the parts to themselves. But that works fine!

image

all parts mounted, “chips” glued on with hot glue

image

The black Sanyo chip has the red wires super-glued into it and into the board.

next will be the “tubes”… stay tubed …errrhh… tuned!

Tele-tubies!

parts I used: drippers, cut to fit, and a picture of nixie tubes.

image

image

bunch of red blue gray wires, cut to length

image

drill the wires together, big glob of glue on top of it and into the “tube” (with an extra glob of glue inside)

image

cut from polystyrene board, glued together with plastic model kit glue and then painted black with revell colors

image

that will be glued to the board after the tubes have been put into the holes and fixed properly.

one step further. Tray with tubes mounted. Lots of hot glue.

image

next: paint the tops of the tubes black. Come up with something as the “minus/E/arrow”-box, build it, affix it.

But best is: I am really happy so far. Overall still the cheapest bit of the costume/uniform yet.

Looking good! You might could use some clear sticker printer paper to make the “E” for the error box.

finish is sight!

little white plastic “E-Box”. 4 layers of styrene, the 4th with an opening. Glued together, the recess painted black with non-watersoluable feltpen.

image

the “E”, dash and arrow sticker is a simple printout on adhesive paper. Cut to fit, and applied.

Question: what are the original colors of the symbols? Are they different for each symbol?

I need to color those, I think.

finished Gizmo. I put flexible PU foam on the back to stop it moving in the belt holder/pocket. Maybe I will attach a pushbutton also, so it keeps sitting neatly centered.

image

Tomorrow the shaver cord will be festened as last bit.

If you search “Sanyo 808d”, you’ll see the colors. And looking good!

could not find a picture where the colors were recognizable, so I made a new sticker, now the E-dash-arrow are dark orange. This evening I attached the shaver cable to the board with two little screws (from the back of the board, but under the foam).

No need yet for further actions, the board stays in the belt holder, even when I wildly jump up and down.

Will provide a picture of the set when I wear the uniform next time.

want to have an arrow, a dash and an “E”? In different colors?

here you go:

recognized that I forgot the red wires to the E-box, attached them.
