Ok..dont know really where to put this, but since its Proton pack related, I placed it here.
Sooooooo…I dont know about you guys, but one of the things I really like looking at on this site is the “wanted” section. I look for noobs who want to buy a proton pack for cheep. I really like when someone posts something like this and gets ripped a new ■■■■■■■. I dont know why, but it always makes me laugh my ass off.
With Halloween right around the corner, I get more and more excited hoping random people will stumble across this site posting up in the wanted section, only to have their hopes for a badass costume crushed. What really gets me going is when the person is too dumb to get a clue after people post links on how to build one and they keep going on and on about buying one for cheep. Maybe I’m a little sick in the head, but it satisfies me. Does anyone else experience this?
I think at some point in our lives.. All of us went to the wanted section wanting a full proton pack for next to nothing.
You live, you learn. Then you get luvs.
But I totally understand how people who have no clue can come and ask silly questions. I went to the wanted forum knowing well that this costume would consume around $1000+ depending on how crazy I got.. and I got crazy pretty quickly.
I came here thinking I was going to be able to put together a suit and build a pack for $200. Of course that’s when I planned to make one out of foam that wasn’t screen accurate. Then things got out of hand.
I quiver before your Ghostbuster Eliteness. Not really, I think your a ■■■■■■.
It’s post like this that get read by noobs who are simply looking for help or to be able to purchase a pack inexpensively that say ■■■■ this site I’m going somewhere else. For many first time costumers it is there first time visiting forums. So basically you are affecting the traffic this site gets. Maybe Daddy didn’t hug you enough when you were little but the fact that you feel the need to make fun of other peoples inexperience and knowledge in regards to this costume is more hilarious then anything else. Makes me believe your a pretty weak person off the computer.
How about educate them on the less costly versions and how to use the search option politely. I guarantee you’ll see the traffic of this site increase. But if your goal is just to look like a ■■■■■■■■■ then your doing a pretty good job of it.
Let me be the first to educate you:
**cheep: ** A faint, shrill sound like that of a young bird; a chirp.
it depends on what you want to do. I helped a 14 yr old kid with ideas to build “proton packs” to run around and have fun. Those packs will be cheap. If you want a pack that is like the ones in the movies with Exoray light FX, dixie clips, ribbon cable, etc. then, yes, it’s going to run you well over $1000. How would a noob know this? They ave. on ebay for $800 but some of those are rip-off packs that aren’t worth $300.
Funny thing is that you can buy a PC for $400 (or a Asus EEE for $250) that actually WORKS, but a PROP proton pack is almost 3 times that much! Maybe that’s why people think they can get it for $100…
Is that anything like people thinking proton packs in GB3 would be smaller because of computers and other eletronics getting smaller? I mean because a hand held particle accelerator is totally something that is doable, right?
maybe. The thing is, it has been 25 years. A lot has changed. Assuming that you could build a nuclear accelerator as a backpack in the 1980’s, it would probably be 1/4 that size now. I had a Commodore 64 that has 32K or RAM. There are thumb drives with 16 GB on them. The EEE I mentioned has a 7" screen, and I had a Sony Clie that was a computer with a color screen that could fit in the palm of your hand. But, people still want to build proton packs the same way they were built 25 years ago. To each his/her own I guess..
Because, ya know, some people can actually follow technological history instead of ostrich-head themselves. Hand held portable phones never used to exist either. At first commercial application they started out as massive grey bricks and now not only are they smaller than the average wallet but they are practically personal computers in their own right. All in the span of a couple decades! With the improvement of our science and our technology we went from the very first flight to landing on the moon in under 70 years. We’ve gone from the Ford Model T to a Ford GT500 that does the 1/4 mile in 9 seconds.
So to think that with technological advancements and scientific advancements from 1984 to 2009+ that it’d be impossible to improve the design of even a fantasy-based product shows total ignorance to reality and history. Not to say that it WOULD get smaller but that it isn’t unrealistic for it to happen if the writers make it so.
I built a pack that is so close to the on screen packs, you literally cannot tell the difference. It cost under 100, but the amount of time it took was high, so it breaks down like this:
pack and parts–$60
time-- took 40 hours to make lets say.
that means my time cost about 1 dollar an hour for labor, if it sold for $100. Which would be an insult for a highly skilled builder such as myself to charge so little for their valuable time.
it was very easy to arrive at this conclusion because 60 plus 40 equals 100.
Yes because I missed the fact that the first computers used to take up huge rooms and were made of vaccum tubes before IC’s were made. Yep, I sure missed that one somewhere huh?
If we are doing today’s technology verus what they used 25 some years ago, a nuclear powered pack is probably still the way to go to be honest, the power out put of the particle acclerator has to be quite huge, even if they tried to tweak the power output, I still think the original pack would still be. Considering what an accelerator does, the power output will probably not really improve. But now we are getting into theory of the proton packs.
Not all technology is equal in terms of advancement. Alot of things like radio’s, tv’s, computers, calculators, phones have been driven by a lot of the same core technology, IC’s. I mean think about how man IC’s drive the Hadron Collider.
They may do something like EXB then which seemed to have a much more slimmed down pack and different power source.
This is the very reason doing a squel 25 years later can be bad as people rather see the classic equipment in use versus new stuff.
Sure do act like it. Otherwise to make the assumption that it’s impossible for the technology to improve, in an arrogant “I’m right you’re wrong” attitude when we’re clearly talking about hypothetical non-existent fantasy to begin with, it shows a complete disregard for reality and any actual ancient or recent history.
No, not all are equal. It’s why the computing power of a simple average vehicle today is stronger and faster than that of Apollo 11. But all do make progress. Period. And since we are talking about nuclear power…
They have the audacity to introduce the possibility of a backyard Nuclear power station the size of a tractor shed which can itself power up to 20K homes? ZOMGzorz! What is this? Nuclear power technology advancing? And shrinking in size? But this can’t be!
That’s not fantasy even. That’s reality. And if a company can take what is traditionally a 5-story cooling tower and a warehouse size reactor down to THAT then I think it’s not beyond fathomable to dream that within 25 years Ray and Egon could plausibly improve a Proton Pack’s design and technology. It might not get smaller, hell they might improve it by using the same housing yet increasing the power, speed, and efficiency. That’s just as plausible as making it bigger w/ additions, or making it smaller/lighter so they can be more maneuverable on the job since they are getting older.
And this is the advancement of nuclear power technology after 3 Mile Island and The China Syndrome basically stonewalled the industry since the mid-70’s. Imagine what it’d be like today if hundreds of other plants were able to open up and continuously and vigorously improve their production and equipment.
As I’ve said to others on this same subject, you’re looking at it through the eyes of fan who enjoys their classic movie and doesn’t want to see it “ruined”. You’re not looking through the eyes of a writer thinking of Ghostbusters as a real entity and Proton Packs as actually existing products. Note the difference.
Yes, because I majored in computers, including engineering designing the chips, I have aboslutely no idea that technology advances in any way shape or form…oh woe is me thinking we still live in the days of rotary telephones, black and white tv’s, tube radios…no computers because nothing advanced one bit..
I prefer their TVG idea’s, tapping into the original pack, increasing its use far beyond the need to completely redesign them or “shrink them.” Besides, it wouldnt’ be as mad scientist looking if they had some stream lined state of the art modern pack, kind of defeats the whole purpose that GB is a comedy and the fact they were doing it with home garage type building makes it even better. I’d love to see the dark matter generator or meson collider incorporated into the new movie. The TVG did show they made something smaller…the slime blower by putting in part of the Proton Pack which was a brilliant idea, I’d rather see more stuff like that.
Shrug Let them make a new pack, hope they make it fail in the movie and they have to go back to the old packs.

I don’t think I’d want to see BTTF4 unless they solely featured the train and nothing else, though they COULD bring it back with a DeLorean as they are back in production.
And what they did with Star Trek was a complete reboot, I didn’t mind the Enterprise was a lot more modern, it wasn’t a sequel to anything.
Oh and speaking of the original topic here, remember, you can building a $3000 proton pack for $50, yep, it will look the same, lights, sounds basically screen accurate..yep for $50.
Hahahaha. That is twisted man. But it gets real annoying real fast after about the 5th post asking the same thing, espcially when those 5 posts are all on the same page and within one or two posts of one another; which holds true for any topic on this board. Use the search function, that is what it is there for. It really isn’t that hard of a concept.
When you look at it that way; it’s kinda messed up how we’ll pay out big bucks for our props but whine and complain about other cost. I know I’m guilty of it
well, if it wasn’t for the “classic vs new” pack argument, we wouldn’t have the Steel City GB’s. I was working on a prototype packs just screwing around and it turned into a philosophical debate. Dave found me, we both realized that we were in Pittsburgh. That was last year. Now we have a growing franchise, a lot of filming done for the fans film, custom uniforms, etc. Oh, wait. That’s progress. : )
Depends on how you write the story. The casings for the packs could “stay” the same since that’s what clients “expect” to see (like a patent or trademark) and maybe they are really expensive (high tech materials, low production run, custom molding/casting, etc.) so they keep reuisng the casings (like a car, replacing parts on it)
But, like in the video game, they would add attachments. And the game is set in 1991, so look at the boom in technology since 1991! That doesn’t mean that they won’t make “new” gear (look at XGB and RGB cartoons) to supplement the technology. Seems like most folks have turned this into a “my pack is more accurate than yours” contest. That’s boooooooooring. I like seeing the new tech myself. : )
They aren’t easy to build (I’ve done 2 “kit packs” myself) so there is a sense of accomplishment, I guess.
