Well, isn’t this shiny? I’m working on a new project for Dragon*Con 2012, something cheap but awesome which combines two things I love very much - Ghostbusters and Firefly.
I met some of you this year at D*C, but I was pre-occupied with the Metal Gear and Firefly stuff. That’s one good reason to combine two interests - maybe I’ll wear my costume longer.
I found a nice pile of khaki suiting in my fabric supply, and while it’s not ripstop, I think it will work for costume purposes. Once I’ve got the basic jumpsuit together, I’ll toss up some pictures. I’m going off the pattern I made for my original Kaylee jumpsuit (sleeveless, one pocket on the breast, one deep pocket on each hip). Since she generally wears quarter-sleeve patterned shirts under her jumpsuit, I was going to do a black shirt with the “no-ghost” printed big on both shoulders. Kaylee also wears three patches on her outfit. I was going to replace the teddy bear she wears on her knee with this Mr. Stay Puft patch (unless someone else has a better idea): The heart on her other leg would become the “no-ghost” patch. Does anyone know where I can get it in a smaller size? Not sure what do do for the little flower-shaped patch on her waist, BUT it would be covered by my web belt anyway, so… Also, she only has it after the events of the first episode.
I was going to embroider my name patch to have this font:
Since she tends to wear little resin pendant necklaces, and I’m casting some other medallions right now, I’d like to go ahead and make a medallion for this costume. What do you think would be a fun image for it? I was thinking about Ecto-1 since in Firefly she’s in love with their ship Serenity, and it makes sense that she’d love her Ghostbusters vehicle just as much.
Well, I’ll update this as the project continues, but for now, it would be awesome to get answers to the questions above. Helps me get a little more direction.
Glad to see you back on the boards! I’m really looking forward to this project - I’ll start coming up with ideas for a Firefly-styled Belt Gizmo and accessories…
FYI, It’s technically against the rules to post eBay links, but I don’t think anyone will make a big deal.
Sounds shiny! I, too am a Firefly kinda guy! I have a pair of tightpants, but lately I have been a little too heavy on the Twinkies, and Cheese its, and can’t fit into them anymore, but maybe by next DC. I love the idea! So very cool! Here I am (Your Shiny Capt’n) at DC 2010. Again I say, awesome idea!
@ Lewis - I thought she was Inara because of the purple. I saw her in a different Kaylee costume at D*C, I think. I remember her having the jumpsuit up and hanging out with us before the Friday shoot. Maybe it was a different Kaylee.
Resurrecting to get some help with something.
Uniform is almost done, but I’m working on the patches right now. I’m making the name patch and Mr. Staypuft, but I’d like to buy a small no-ghost patch. I’ve found one that’s 2.5" on eBay, but I’m not sure about the workmanship. Katarra8 doesn’t seem to have a small version of the patch. The original patch was a 1.75" heart, so I want to keep it as small as possible. Anyone know of a good source for small, well-done no-ghost patches?
Quick update - To save money this time around, I’m doing a cheapass version of the StayPuft patch, but once I have enough extra to do it, I’m going to have this guy make me a better one.
The jumpsuit is entirely finished minus the patches, of course. I need to find time to photograph it. The name patch is about halfway done. I found the charm I made for the necklace back in November, but I really ought to re-do it. It’s got the Ecto-1 and a butterfly gem floating in it.
I’ve been hand-striping some neon yellow shoelaces so I have caution tape laces. I couldn’t find anyone to custom dye shoelaces affordably. They’re about halfway done as well.
Mikhail keeps promising me some sort of Firefly-themed belt, but I have no idea what that would entail.
