Legality of lights and lightbars (again)

I was wondering if anyone would know where I would find the actualy written proof or statute of the state of illinois or city of chicago concerning the legality of having AMBER lights on your car and not running.

Well here in Ontario, everything regarding any vehicle on the road is governed by the Highway Traffic Act. It say what can and cannot be on what vehicles, and what the various colors mean (police, snow removal, civilian etc..) Check with the State Police for a copy of state traffic laws, then once you are clear on them, see if Chicago has any by-law’s that may add or detract from the State traffic law.

In short summary unless you have a valid reason to use the lights (generally a legit road hazard warning, like towing, snow removal, construction) even if they are amber you could be hassled by the police in Illinois, and they have valid reasons under the law…

Also note the very important “whether lighted or unlighted, is prohibited”

I would say in general the police will leave you alone with amber lights, but technically you would be in violation of the law as written and could be hassled, unless it’s on used for one of the specific reasons outlined under law…

i emailed IDOT and CDOT about getting a parade/show car permit. so we will see what they say.

also, somehting you might want to look into. see if you can get a light bar that you can change the lens from blue to amber as needed. it would be a pain in the ass doing that all the time but atleast you have the option for either one if need be
