So my amber lights came in today and I’m ecstatic, cannot wait til halloween.
Family finds out about it, I now have 4 cops, (one my parent, 1 aunt and 2 uncles) ready to have my ass locked up if i leave with them on my car cuz it’s illegal. Fckin fantastic, stupid bullsht illinois laws that no chicago police officer would enfore on halloween as long as im not being an ass. I just planned on having them on parked places and thats it. Sorry, had to vent
Attach them to your car then cover them with trash bags while driving on the road. Remove the bags when parked for the show. There is nothing illegal about having them just as long as you don’t use them in an illegal manner.
Or wire them up and attach them to magnets for complete removal while on the road.
Define illegal manner? Having them mounted unless on the specified types of vehicles is illegal in Illinois… The law states nothing in regards to being driven on roads at the time or anything of the sort, in merely states “Oscillating, rotating or flashing lights on motor vehicles. Except as otherwise provided in this Code:” and “The use of amber oscillating, rotating or flashing lights, whether lighted or unlighted, is prohibited except on:” that is pretty clear if you ask me…
Feel free to read the Illinois law I have posted in full a few threads down, having them mounted on the car is technically illegal in itself… Covering them will probably avoid any legal issues, but even parked you better be on private property and not a public road/area if you light them up… That is if you want to walk the grey legal line and risk being harrased by the local officers…
Sorry to take the fun out of it but that is the law, and for good reason if everyone was allowed to have flashing lights nobody would pay attention to them when there was a real danger…
Like I said don’t have them visibal when driving. Then technically you are not impersonating anything etc etc. I think it be a valid loop hole to try and exploit. If while you are parked a cop says anything…take them off again without word and move on.
Exactly they can’t 100% expect you to know the law. Plus being its halloween they will understand what you are doing. So if they actually hassel you take them off and say no more.
I think that by rights… they should know you don’t intend to do anything illegal with them. Yes, they have a civic duty to uphold that state’s law… although I think the light laws in Il are a little overboard… but surely them threatening to throw you in jail is a huge knee-jerk reaction considering it’s for display purposes on Halloween.
Ignorance of the law, is not an excuse. I think it sucks too, but I wouldn’t give a cop a reason to ticket you. Just cover them up, or leave them off till you get to private property. Unfortunately, those may be your only options.
Exactly my plan is to not have them on while driving unless in the parking lot where i work or down an empty sidestreet of someone I know and if I do get pulled over, just apologize and take em off
Sounds like you’ve got your ducks in a row in terms of what and what not to do. Have you explained this to your family? Maybe they’re just unclear on what you plan to do. Lay everything out for them and maybe they’ll lighten up.
to too far south of you, in grayslake il, purple light bars are used by hursts during funeral persessions. so you may run into trouble with that too. oh and i contacted the illinois DOT and they said i have to contact the state police.
Not to sound like an ass but it’s HEARSE not HURST…Hurst makes aftermarket shift kits and transmissions…sorry, I’ve owned several hearses (one with a hurst shifter in it!) and that’s just sort of a pet peeve of mine…your point, however is valid.
