My wife took my Parents to the airport yesterday, Airport is 2 hours away and she was going to do some shopping while in the city, so I found myself with a bit of free time. So I spent a few hours putting this together. Hope you guys like it.
Ok so spent a little while this morning doing a bit more on the pack, not a lot (Saturday is laundry day). I also went digging through some boxes in the basement, ( I don’t like to throw anything I might be able to use away and so keep it all tidy in boxes to keep the wife happy) I found an old black vacume hose. Score!!.
I picked up a pack of that foam at harbor freight the other day. I think I really like that stuff! That said, you really want a rigid motherboard. (the back)
Also something to consider: If you are using hot glue, if you leave that in a car in the heat of summer, the hot glue will come apart like mozerella. Maybe you can reinforce that with liquid nails or something else now that its tacked down?
Looking at that, it looks like the pattern on the foam is the same pattern that was on the small cross bars on the booster frame!
Thanks for the kind words guys, I plan on reinforcing the joins next week sometime. I am working on a light system for the pack that I want to install inside before I fix everything down permanently.
The foam works great, it is easy to cut. But if you are cutting an edge that will be seen you want a really sharp blade. It is also easy to mold over the stove or with heat gun. Don`t use superglue. it will bond great at first but then it will just crack along the glue line and break.
I agree, I need to firm up the mother board some. I am thinking a thin piece of wood should do.
Just thought you guys might want to see one of my other foam builds. This was made completely out of foam. The eyes light up and you can still see out of it while they are lit.
Another excellent glue to use for foam is DAP contact cement. You can apply a thin coat of it to either side of the adjoining surfaces, let dry, then apply together for a bond that will last for a good long while (ie the foam will tear before the DAP comes apart). It’s the same stuff we use to make boffer weapons in Belegarth.
Absolutely. In fact, you can find it at your local Walmart, too. Check near the heavier adhesives, by hardware or automotive. In hardware stores it will be next to where you can find tubes of JB Weld.
Wow, seriously guys, thanks for the compliments. To be honest I was a little worried about posting a foam build. I know some people on other forums who frown upon anything not abs or vacume formed.
Anyway I did a bit more on the pack last night, worked on the Crank Generator I think it is called, still learning all the part names.
I am planning on putting sounds inside to make it better. I have some mini sound recorders (From Ebay) that allow you to record up to 40 seconds of sound. I have two of them, one just has one button I am going to put that inot the thrower and when the trigger is pressed it will play a particle beam sound. And I have one with 3 buttons to record three different sounds, I will only use two buttons, and have one that plays a proton pack power up sound and one that plays the poer down sound. It will mean having two switches on the proton pack one for on and one for off, but I think that is ok.

Like everywhere else, there are people here who seem to live to rain on other people’s parades, and there are people who will poo poo anything not accurate to the minute detail.
Thing is, there are also people here that are open minded, and appreciate other people skills regardless of accuracy or build type. We’ve seen packs built from foam core, cardboard, dollar store packs, and someone is even making one from paper right now!
Just build for yourself, and enjoy the compliments from others of like mind.
Here is the next step of the build. The Cyclotron has been done. I do not like the 4 small holes I will be removing them and replacing them with 4 huge washers.
I have made the top of the Cyclotron removable for now so when I get the lights I they can be installed easily, then I will glue the top down.
