So my name is Tom. I joined this site mostly because of my now “healthy” son. I know I don’t have time to make all the props this year but for next year he wants to be a Ghostbuster and I came here looking at plans and at the store which brought me to joining your wonderful site.
A little back story of my purpose here is in order I think.
Two years ago my son was diagnosed with cancer of the liver and kidneys. Really broke my heart to see my son suffer through that and not knowing the outcome. Anyway. They treated him with chemo and radiation therapy for 1 year and 5 months. He went into remission and has gotten a clean bill of health from his doctors. I told him we don’t have a ton of money but I would do anything for him and he told me point blank he wants us to be Ghostbusters for Halloween. By the way he has seen the two movies and played the video games so much he knows all the lines and how to beat the games. That was my fault. Gave him my old NES and PS3 when he was in the hospital.
So here I am doing research to build two packs and all the equipment I can. Don’t got much to play with and my prop building skills are kinda lame so any tips or ideas would be much appreciated.
And before someone else says it, me telling my kid’s story is by no means a sob story to get charity from anyone I just figured I should tell the main reason I am here. It’s for my kid. Yeah I won’t lie I’m still a kid at heart that thinks it would be amazing to own a proton pack but what child of the 80s or 90s wouldn’t want one.
I’m still new to the forum thing is there a thread for building the ecto1? I’m going to be making an updated version out of my old Dodge Magnum. Already painted it white and got a graphics shop to make decals that they will install in about a month. Pretty cheap for 7 year vinyl only paid like $150. Also how do posting pics on this site work? Photo Bucket or right to the site?
There’s lots of information and pictures in the Ectomobiles forum, and in the Equipment Reference Section. Do feel free to post your own build thread in the aforementioned Ectomobiles forum for advice and input.
For images, yeah, you’ll have to use Photobucket or a comparable service.
The situation with your son is so touching. I hope the remission is permanent! You’re a great father.
SO perhaps you could inquire for physical help with the packs from local GBFans members? Unless this project is personal and you’d rather complete the builds alone, it’s worth a shot!
Don’t know if there are any local fans? And it is a little bit of a personal project but I wouldn’t turn down help, I’m a little out of my element with all this. Still gotta buy shells and all that. I was hoping to find a kit for a reasonable price but after reading here I won’t be buying from videobob and he was the guy a friend suggested when I was working on my PIPBOY3000. I stupidly sold it a couple years ago.

Ok so an update before starting my build thread. I asked vic to build my pack so I can focus on my son’s pack and my trap idea. Unfortunately he hasn’t replied
Too bad he doesn’t live closer because I know a couple guys that do prop making that are looking for more work. Reminds me I have to go to my 3d printer guy tonight and pick up parts for my trap.
Well its been fun reading the forums and trying to get a couple projects off the ground. But I have some really sad news. My mother died yesterday so I don’t think I can keep my dreams alive without her help holding my sanity together through my son’s chemo treatments. My wife is amazing but our energy is being spent other places now. Hopefully I’ll come back soon and start my proton build again.
