making fake welds?

hey guys, i see on some of the proton pack builds that they have some nice looking welds. i was wondering whats the best product and tecnique for making nice welds around the injector tubes and thrower box to handles?

jeff

epoxy putty or hot glue is what I’d use, personally.

Bondo through a hobby syrince can be used as well.

New one to me. Thanks.

Hot glue is the easiest method.

cool, thanks guys. ill probably go with the glue gun or epoxy putty. thanks for the info guys…

jeff

Hot glue is the easiest in the aspect that you can just goop it on there and call it good, but epoxie putty is the most controllable and you dont have to worry about it running.

I also agree on the epoxy. If you will be making the fake welds with your fingers, wear a latex glove, or you’ll leave finger prints on your weld… hehehe. Some people use a the eraser part of a pencil as well.

That syringe method sounds pretty good, too!

I’m guessing you’re saying that because you probably suck at using a glue gun?

I can replicate a TIG weld perfectly with hot glue.

You can’t blame the game if you don’t know how to play

thats how i made the welds on my scratch built rocketeer helmet. the welds are beautiful.its a shame the tubing on it wont stay down though. i use hot glue for everything.

And paint sticks to the hot glue without a problem?

Yup. The only problem with hot glue is that it doesn’t work well for holding things together because it’s meant for porous surfaces.

sand a little bit before you bond something with hot glue to work.

I use epoxy putty let it set up and harden a bit then use the edge of the butt end of my hobby knife on it while still

slightly soft I do this bout two three times on one section then repeat for the next got some nice weld lines on the

injection tubes using this method as well as on the ion arm

Whatever you’re using to make your welds, it should only be for cosmetic purposes and not for holding anything together, epecially something like your wand handles into the box.

Use Epoxy Putty, you could usually find this in the plumbers section of either Home Depot or Lowes. I prefer this because it just blends into resin much better, much stronger, you have full control on what you want your welds to look like and you get an even paint job, hot glue welds tend to give you a two tone paint job, spray paint tends to cure differently on hot glue and kind of gives more of a gloss then semi-gloss, also you dont want to bump something and your hot glue weld just falls off  Epoxy putty is the way to go!

Chris

If you can squeeze the epoxy through a nozzle like a hot glue gun does, you’ll get the best of both worlds then

MIGHTY PUTTY!!!

I used High temp hot glue and then used a pencel to add a few detail lines. The High Temp doesn’t cool all that fast, so it does give you some time to “play”

i have to say pchrisbosh, that frank avatar is awesome. its one of my favorite movies of all time.
