My First [real] Proton Pack

I’ve built a few junk packs in the past, and started work on a pretty decent foam core pack that I never finished, so this marks the first proton pack I’ve worked on in my new age of building. It started with one of the new shells Java was prototyping. It needed a bit of work when I got it, in addition to it getting broken in several places during shipping. I didn’t take many photos of its original condition, but the first few might give you an idea of the starting point.

I know it looks rough, but I think Java’s method has potential and I hope he has kept it up, trying to perfect it.

The first step was patching, filling, sanding and priming / repeat.

I couldn’t find a resin bumper, so I went out on making my own.

Tacked the cut outs together with a little super glue so I could sand them to the same size.

A little MDF sandwiched in the middle.

The curved areas were made by laying a thin piece of lubricated plastic over the top of the MDF, then filling the back side with resin.

I left the back kind of ugly since it won’t really be seen anyway.

Didn’t feel much like buying a pre-made Ion Arm Assembly, nor did I want to try cutting one out of a metal bar, so I went working on a veneer.

Same principal was applied to the cable clamp.

I used a smaller-than-accurate tube for my N-Filter, but I don’t mind it so much. After drilling the holes, I used buffer wheels to act as the filters.

Here is my battery set up inside of the pack. These 7 D-Cells supposedly carry a 10,000 capacity and together produce 8.4 volts. After powering the batteries once and letting them run, they have thus far been powering my pack for over 25 hours. I am going to let them go until they run out to see how long they last me. I’ve been told that these particular batteries take a few charges and de-charges until they start to work at full capacity, so whatever the performance is with this test may not even truly show how long these things can last.

Here is how it looks on the back of my pack. The switch is to cut off the current from the batteries to the lights so I can charge them without worrying about the charger doing something to the circuits. The computer cable was spliced together with the batteries and battery thermometer, with the male adapter spliced with the charger for easy proton charging.

Wow…if you hadn’t posted the progress pics, I would never have guessed that your ion arm block was a soda can wrapped around wood. That’s just awesome.

Excellent work! I did somewhat of the same thing, using a thin sheet of tin over a wood block, but I never bothered to actually do a wrap around. Since the edges aren’t really seen much, its hard to tell.

I bought a tin sheet they use for gutter repairs, but your solution is thinner, easier to work, and cheaper.

and that bumper is just fantastic. theres something about seeing a well made bumper that really excites me (i need to get out more haha).

TC, that is an awesome job. hats off the on bringing that shell back to life.

somethings wrong with your ribbon cable setup. either the cable is too narrow or the clamp is too wide. If the cable is the correct one it should be 3" wide and the cable clamp should be 3-5/8" wide. Other than that everything looks great. I’m digging the GB2 accurate copper rods too!

the ion arm and cable clamp look amazing too for using a soda can.

Good stuff TC you really brought the shell back and gave it life. Your spectra strip looks a tad bit thin though. I find it funny that the people on here that offer some of the highest quality stuff don’t have packs. Good to see you finally have a nice one on your hands. Congrats.

Is the strip thin? I bought it in 2001 when I made my junk pack, we didn’t have much info back then.

I’ll have to get you to make me one of those nice GB1 cables you made.

Im gonna use your n-filter idea i like that rather than just putting white round sticky labels on it. I actually looks like a filter inside it and thats a nice pack…

I have to agree with the filter. Even if it’s not accurate to the movie packs, I say it’s a far better idea which adds that extra touch of realism. I’ll definitely be doing that on the pack I build. Thanks for the awesome idea.

I friggin’ love the buffer wheel idea! I’m going to definitely use that one on mine! Brilliant! Best N-filter I’ve seen in quite a while!

Ha, you know what is funny? I didn’t even realize using the buffer wheels would be inaccurate. We have called it the N-Filter for so long that I just assumed the white holes were some kind of cloth filter for air intake. Even if they are solid on the movie packs, I’m going to go on thinking that they intended them to be some sort of cloth filter.

Great work looks really good. I like you idea with the soda can… Giving me good ideas on how to keep the cost down..
