My Pack Picks / Updated 5-25-08 / Semi Complete with Fitting

You can probably guess by all my activity lately that I’ve been working on my pack. I got my pack shell from Loveusmokey on E-Bay and some of you may recall that the bumper doesnt fit. My bumper was also purchased from Loveusmokey, and that is going back to them for a replacement. The pack came painted with a flat black, but the paint job was probably just for show on E-Bay. It wasnt very even but again who cares about that. I had to remove most of the paint just so that I could attach most of the components. You dont get a very good bond when you attempt to glue to paint.

To start I buffed most of the paint off, smoothed out the surfaces a little, I did very little bondo work, but I did build up some of the pack using some resin to reinforce what I felt were weak areas. I stripped all the paint from areas where I needed to use expoxy, and also used some mechanical fastners where needed.

This first image is the site of the Injectors. The pack came with pre-drilled holes, but I didnt like them at all so I filled them in with resin and decided to attach my injectors a different way. I didnt get a perfectly smooth surface, so I put a little glazing compound on that, and sanded it flat. I bored out some sockets and then mounted a dowel inside the socket with glue and a wood screw from behind. Then I fit the PVC over the dowel and into the socket for a very tight fit. I used very little expocy to secure the injectors in place. They are about 1/2 shorter than Steffans plans. I initially had cut them to the plan, but they just looked wrong to me. I looked at a ton of images from the packs here, Planet Hollywood and other places and I finally decided to cut them down just a touch. I think they turned out great!

Here you can see the pack shell about ready to receive the injectors, as well as augmentation to the Filler Plug and I Beam. (feel free to correct me if I get the terminology wrong on the plug and beam)

In this image you see an Ion Arm from the Shop (thanks AJ) installed next to the booster and PPD. The interior of the Ion Arm was hallow, and like the Injectors I mounted a small block of wood to the Pack Shell, fastened it from behind with a screw and some epoxy. I fit the Ion Arm over the block so that it is very sturdy. I was going to fasten the Aluminum block with the brass rods (also called Ion Arm I think) before I mounted this, but I had a hard time holding onto the bolt inside that long and narrow box. In the end I decided that I could always glue that on later. I also had to cut out the site for the power cell. I drilled some holes down the center, and then took small drum sander on my Dremmel until I had a straight edge. I used a square file to hit the corners so that they are nice and sharp.

Here is the area that I added some resin. I wanted to build up the edges a bit so that it wasnt so brittle.

Here is another shot, the pack on its back now as I begin to dry fit the injectors, filler plug and beam.

Finally I get to the point where everything is installed (except the bumper) and I have thrown a very light coat of primer on the pack. Here are three images from different angles.

And I cant say thank you enough for all the help everyone gave me. The messages, comments and instructions have been invaluable. I’m kind of at a stand still now until I get a better fitting bumer. I may play with some mounting hardware and try to fit it to the motherboard in the mean time. Again, thanks for your help and support.

Looking good!

Very impressive! I have the same shell from loveusmokey. I’m hoping mine will look that good when I start working on it. Thanks for giving some tips on how to strengthen the brittle edges - I’ll definitely do that.

What size dowels did you use for the injectors and the filler plug and beamline? It also looks like you used some wood caps too.

Looks great!

I used 1" Schedule 40 PVC, which is a little thicker than standard PVC. The dowel was 1", which is not quite an inch, but when you add the glue you get a pretty tight fit. I purchased the stuff at Lowes. The 1" Schedule 40 PVC fits perfectly over the two protrusions on the pack, so all I had to do there was sand off the paint, cut the PVC to length and then glue it in place. Bingo, there is my Beam and Filler Plug.

I was looking around for some ABS to make the caps for the PVC piping and I couldnt find any, so at the hobby shop they had some plywood. Wood is pretty easy to work with, so why not? I purchased a small sheet of 1/4" thick plywood and then used my hole saw to cut the caps. I was thinking of using some bondo / glazing putty to smooth them over, but as I was looking at the photos from one of the Planet Hollywood packs, it looks as if the tube has a cap on it, so its all good. I still have some finishing work to do there as I need to plug that one hole.

So far its been a lot of fun. I’m going to give the pack a light sanding once the primer has a chance to cure for a day, and then start in on my black finish coat. I’m gonig to use a flat black, and then cover that with a satin clear. I did that with my gun, and the finish is exactly what I was looking for. It will be fun once I start to finally put on the split loom, the various fittings, tubes wires and resistors.

The final touch will be installing the lights and sound. More to come on that when the time comes.

Thanks for posting this. I think I’m gona use some of your ideas for my pack.

I’ve got the same pack and I’ve been fitting various parts over the weekend, I’m slightly behind where you are and it’s great to see yours coming together. It’s made me rethink the fitting of a couple of pieces

Keep us updated with pics please

Glad to see that I’m helping with my post. I went out to fit the motherboard to the pack and its about 90% accurate. I’m assuming that Ircanian’s MB is spot on, and the pack shell is off. This could also account for the problems I’m having with the bumper. I’ll try to take a few photos of that so you all can see what kind of issues I’m having. As Loveusmokey is one of the only suppliers for this part right now, I’m happy to be showing everyone how I am managing the small issues I’ve encountered so far. This is also a great back door educational thread on this particular pack shell. OK I have walked the dog and now I have some time to post a few photos. I hope this isnt too long and boring, but I figured I could give a good example of how the Loveusmonkey pack looks, and how I have chosen to build it up.

Here are some photos of the edges of the pack as they fit the Motherboard. In most of the cases the fit is right on.

A closeup of the injector site, and the fit of the MB to the pack shell in that area.

I have not moved the MB or touched the shell from the first two photos, but here is where the fit is dissimilar

And again from the other side. Its funny because one of the tabs is perfect, but the other one isnt quite right.

Here is inside the pack where I used a screw to mount a wood block for the Ion Arm. I used a washer with a Neoprene bushing to prevent noise and allow for the irregular finish inside the pack. You can see the differences in Resin from the corner to the edges. This is not an area where I did any buildup, it came that way.

Here is the inside site of the injectors. The pack came pre-drilled but I filled in the holes with Resin and then used the site to attach the injectors a different way. You can see where I drilled through and again used the same method to attach the wooden dowel, then eventually seated the PVC tubing over the dowel and into the socket that I drilled.

The last set of shots chronicles my issues with the Bumper. Here you can see that the arms of the bumper are really too short to fit the pack. Both the pack and the bumper are sitting on my work bench.

Here is an attempt to fit the bumper to the pack.

And the other side, look at the fit.. Not only are the bumper arms too short, but the bumper isnt wide enough to fit the pack itself. You can see how the arm is actually bent outwards trying to fit over the pack shell. For my purposes this is totally unacceptable. I want the bumper to fit perfectly, so its going back for a replacement.

And again alittle further out for some more perspective.

Ok, so that is the photo update for today. Hopefully when the bumper is replaced it will fit propertly. If not I’m going to have to look for another bumper, or cut the thing and try to splice in a plug to stretch it a good 5/8" Even then the arms would be too short to properly reach the Motherboard. I might be in the market for a bumper, so if anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Thanks!

I think this is common. I bought a different shell and I have the same circumstance.

Looks very good. I’m hoping to purchase a shell from lovesusmonkey so hopefully I can get something along those lines! Looking forward to seeing more of this because it gives me an idea of what to do with mine!

Today I filed down the motherboard to fit the size of my shell. I used a file and power tool which can sand metal. I just outlined the parts I wanted to cut off and presto. It worked pretty well and took me about 20-30 minutes.

I don’t know what to say about the bumper. It sucks that you have to find another one.

Here is a photo of the pack about 80% complete. I have yet to install any of the fittings, or mount it to the motherboard. Also, I have to solve the Bumper problem. My initial bumper is on its way back for replacement. Hopefully the new one fits.

That looks very, very clean. You’re doing a bang up job.

That looks pretty sharp. Well done!

Looks great! Really clean mold too.

I heard back from the fine folks behind the Loveusmokey pack shell and bumper. Some of you may recall that I had some challenges fitting the bumper to the shell. To make a long story short I contated them by e-mail, and they offered to send me a replacement part. I shipeed them back my bumper, and they did some work on the mold to get things all perfect. I’ve heard back from them just yesterday and my new bumper is on its way! Pretty soon I’ll be fitting the new and improved bumper to the pack and I’ll be able to update you all with my dazzling photos!

I know that some folks dont enjoy the resin pack, but its been very easy to work with and the overall experience has been good. And I cant say enough about the Loveusmokey syndicate. They do good work, provide nice clean parts and for the most part I have been extremely satisfied. My Loveusmokey parts inventory includes the Metal Ion Arm (very nice) the HGA (which I smashed on accident, but rebuilt as good as new) the pack shell which was very clean and needed hardly any work, and the booster frame.

Now, if I only had more spare time.

that pack is looking AWSOME guv! i think ill be ordering my shell and bumper from loveusmonkey also

Hey Governor, now you´ve become the master! Congrats , nice job on the paint.

Keep us posted on your work

Thats funny, i also have the lovusmokey pack and bumber, and i had the exact same problem. Glad to see im not the only one. I just contacted her as well about the bumber and got the same result so hopefully it looks good when you post the pics and i’ll also return mine. Just want to mention to others that these are great packs and look really awesome im pretty much complete with mine just a few small issues.

Also Governor can you let me know how in the hell do you put in the power cell lens on this mold?

Good to hear they replaced it. I think I’m at the same point you are.
