The CWU-27 refers to the military current issue Nomex flightsuit and is manufactured by various government contractors and not Gibson & Barnes. They just sell them.
Gibson and Barnes makes the same suit but offers a wider choice fabrics and options and designates it FSL-27 ( FSL stands for Flight Suit Ltd.) This is what was would have been the call-out for the suits in GB2.
Ecto-Skywalker… Bummer huh? I was told by the salesman that the FSL-27’s used to be made with a storm flap but some customers (friggin’ pilots!) have asked that it be removed because it causes the suit to bunch up while they fly. ??? So the feature was discontinued even though the orange FSL-27 flight suit on page 57 of their catalogue clearly shows the storm flap and brass zippers. I too didn’t know of the change until after I received it. I was offered a complete refund but I kept the suit anyway. I’ll probably Ebay it this October.
My next suit is going to be just a regular ol’ tan Nomex flight suit. It looks the same, has metal zippers, a storm flap, and is about $30 cheaper. To me, the color is so neglegable that I’m not going to monkey with it again… it’s fine the way it is.
I saw Spengler’s suit at a Planet Hollywood many years ago and under restaurant lighting, looked very tan to me. Not as pink as one would think ( ha, a rhyme!) so lighting has a lot to do with how an audience perceives the true color of wardrobe. The original fabric probably did have a hint of muave but who knows? It’s long gone by now.
Hey Thanks! I’m not going to tell you how many times I dyed/removed color/re-dyed. It ended up being more of a quest than a project.
I bought mine a couple of years ago from a web site I can’t remember now. But they are fairly easy to find. It does not have three holes it only has two and it has a plastic buckle in the front, similar to the kidney ■■■■■■■■ the ALICE pack.
oh, nevermind, i see what you are talking about. its called a PASS device. firefighters use them. once you turn it on, it becomes motion sensative. the device beeps real loud it doesnt detect movement any more. so when a firefighter goes down, the others can follow the beeping sound to find him. i believe the ones used in the film were Lifegard IV’s
Still, you’re not that old!.. My brother and sister are older than you.
Probably not at a sporting goods store, anymore… Those things, I believe, are circa late 80s.
Check eBay, I probably wouldn’t pay more than $20 for one. Or try your local fire department. They might have some old ones laying around. That’s how I got mine.
dude, do an advanced search and then save that search. ebay will then email, you have to set up how long ebay will keep track, when ever there is something listed.
