New build in Texas

Hey y’all. Starting a build (for several packs) for me and some friends. I built a pack 2 years ago out of nothing but Styrofoam and other cheap things. But now, I have a mission.

A buddy of mine wants to go to comicon before (hopefully) GBIII comes out, and we’ll be going in full garb and everything. So I says to him, I says that I’ll make the packs, and he’s gotta get his own uniform together. Well, after a few days of toiling through multiple schematics online, I’ve found a good route to go, and have since made one proton gun.

Currently, there is one unpainted proton gun I have, and it is wired up to a sound chip I got from replica props. I tell ya, it is awesome to pick it up and flip a switch and hear it come to life. I have 4 sheets of MDF waiting for pencil tracings of mother boards and all the other stuff. I’m using epoxy and wood screws to keep the thing together, and the pack will be like a wooden shell, so I will be able to route electronics through it.

I also made the executive decision to make and EGB pack (possibly 2 if I want one) for my buddy’s fiance. She’s a GB nut, too.

As I go through my makings, I’ll post up pics. I’ll get some online of my gun in a little bit (just have to upload them to photobucket).

Here’s a bit of history: The styrofoam pack.

It took somewhere around 2-3 days to make. Classes got in the way, and waiting for the wall putty covering it to dry. Then painted it, and added few details.

The gun I made to go along with it got destroyed. I don’t know why I keep this one around. Oh well. Stunt pack!

A few pics of the new Nutrona wand:

This also has the sound assembly with it.

I’m taking liberties with the equipment I build. First thing I did was add the pack vent button next to the vent on the gun. The soundchip has the vent sound from the game. So, it will not be “screen accurate”, but still recognizable.

Interior with circuitry

Comments appreciated. Just make sure you leave them on the back of a $20 bill.

Nothing new to report. Started back at college. Probably get back to work on the pack in a week or 2.

Ok, old project scrapped after a SNAFU with the shell I was making. I’m also ditching the plywood gun. The electronics were saved.

I have new stuff in from Studio Creations, and just ordered MMM’s Proton Gun. Also a shout out to R2DEVO for his pack lights, proptronix for his gun lights, gbdude1011 for his vinyl decals (all for a complete GB look: pack, gun, metallic clippard, goggles, trap, and No Ghost logos on the way), and ReplicaProps.com and Rob @ the same for his sound module. This is almost “plug and wear”.

The checklist so far:

Pack shell

Proton gun (On its way)

Pack lights

Gun lights

Pack sounds

All necessary wiring

Decals

Need:

Mobo (will custom make from wood)

All the doo-dads for the pack and gun

Next project (probably will do while building pack), Ecto-Goggles. They seem easy enough. And I already have LEDs for them since someone bought me a Discovery Kids “nightvision” glasses that don’t work. I will incorporate them into the set-up.

Pictures will come sooner or later.

Thank you for your time.

Damn, I hate missing build threads. And be sure to throw some pictures up once you have them, I love seeing how people end up putting their packs together.

Why scrap the plywood gun?!

It had potential!

Mine’s plywood!

Course mine’s kinda hot glue hideous in a well lit room…

What’d you do with it?

Its still wired up. I had taken it as far as painting it black (spray paint), and kinda assembled the bottom plate with hot glue. Well, that was another bad mess. The plate was too big, stuck out everywhere, and.. well, it was an eyesore. Plus, I couldn’t get the bevel on the top left side right. As you can see, it was made from Loctite putty (which I can’t find anymore.. boo..), and tried to sand it to the best of my ability.

I dunno. It may still be used in one of the packs I’ll make.

Posted some pics on my page here.

Got some more work done on my pack. “Fused” the two shell pieces together, put the v-hook on the pack, and dremmeled some plastic for easy placement of wires. Also have my MMM gun kit in. View here: http://www.gbfans.com/fans/props/proton-packs/3337/

So right now, I can either:

  • Put the pack aside, work on the MMM gun kit

  • Make Mobo for pack

  • Make bumper for pack

  • twiddle my thumbs and make more money for more pack parts.

I’m thinking mid March I can have it done. Just need to be motivated.

I’ll give you motivation! That pack you’re wearing in your avatar? MY pack? You KNOW it felt good to wear that for the few minutes you did.

You’ll build this new pack. You’ll build it good and proper and in a timely yet not rushed fashion! We’ve got Comicpalooza at the end of March, sir!

So hip it up, hoppy!

HAHAHAHAHAHA… wtf!?

I’ll get it done, sir. I estimate another $200 to be spent before its completed, and that’s manageable come late this month/early next month.

Heh. Just kidding. Every once in a while I feel like being an ass.

Well, made me laugh!

More pics added of my build in my Props section. Did work on the MMM gun kit, drilled holes, tapped, filled, retapped, and got things in place. Some even glued down. I think the SNAFU of the day was going to Home Depot and getting a tap/dye set. Well, when I got home and my dad saw it, he said we already had a set. DAMN! But, I didn’t open the set, and returned it. Yay!

Haha! Yeah, I nearly got a tap and dye set the other day thinking “This will come in handy!” Then I thought to call my dad and ask if he had a set. His response was “American or metric?”

My Pop is the go-to man for tools. Seriously. Visit www.papawswrench.com. That’s his website.

That styrofoam pack gave me nightmares…

Haha, sorry.

Well, got a lot of work done on my Nutrona wand tonight. Photographs available in the gift shop… I mean my profile. On the agenda for tomorrow:

  • Wash w/ soap and water

  • Prime

  • Silver paint

  • Satin Black paint

  • Add knobs and decals

Sunday (Before the Houston Area Ghostbusters meet and greet)

  • Install electronics

  • Squeal with happiness

Then it will be on to finishing the pack shell, and installing the electronics in it, and mounting it to the MoBo and ALICE frame.

Then, only then, a true Ghostbuster shall I be.

Badass, Tuba! Yes yes, progress! We’re making prooogress!

With Comicpalooza on the Horizon you have a deadline to keep!
