NYCC 2012: Mattel's Ecto Goggles

Three months have elapsed since Mattel debuted their Ecto Goggles at San Diego Comic Con. Yesterday marked the first day of New York Comic Con, and as is the case with the major toy manufacturers, Mattel was there and had brought the newest iteration of their Ecto Goggle prop to show. Revealed is the location for the power supply, as well as the mock battery cover for the Goggles, a mystery knob and the sticker sheet.

The Pros:

*The lenses now have “glass” in them.

*They will apparantly run off of a single AAA battery.

The Cons:

*To allow for the inclusion of the power supply, and possibly easy construction, the Goggles now have some very visible manufacturing lines.

*The Goggles still feature the troublesome mounting method for the strap.

*The black lense still appears too short compared to the silver lense. Likely a tweak for the fans to perform if things don’t change between now and when it goes on sale.

Misc Notes:

The side label featuring the diagram of the Goggles appears to use a slightly modified version of the Label I posted on this forum a while back:

Here’s hoping that if they have a batter present, they might have a working prototype with them at the convention.

Im actually a little less impressed now then I was 3 months ago. are these still supposed to have an “animated” slimer while wearing them?

Yep, moving in synch with the beeps on the PKE Meter.

Speaking of which, any theories as to what that item on the underside of the PKE’s base is?

That has to be the transmitter from the PKE to the goggles.

i sure hope more people come less enthusiastic about this so i can not worry about getting mine.

come on kids! do it! hate it so i can get two! you know you want to! hate it so much so you dont want to get one! just bad mouth the heck out of it!

go on! do it!

The black lens is way too small for my taste

Because it’s going to get brought up I’m going to point out NOW that the knob on the larger lens under it isn’t attached at all.

It’s just propping the goggles up.

I still want these… Why do I have to own every prop from mattel!?

They look good to me.

I’ve been satisfied with the other Matty props so I hope this turns out well.

I’m not looking forward to dealing with Mattys BS to get them, though.

I wonder if they will come with padding or not?

Is it me, or does it almost look like they based them off the horribly disproportionate ecto goggles on the 6" Ray? I don’t know but I think I will pass on these at this point based on the fact that they don’t look anything like the real ones and pretty much everything Kingpin mentioned.

If I remember correctly the original theory was it was an unused power cord connection…I’d have to go back and find the thread but from what I remember at the time the discussion was either that was where the Iona plugs in and they kept it in the mold or they had toyed with the idea of an AC adapter or recharger or something…The idea of that being the transmitter makes sense but at the same time that’s a LOT of forethought, especially when you consider the delay in bringing the goggles out vs the meters…it seems like if they were supposed to work together they’d come out back to back…unless there’s a function with the trap as well…

Either way I’m gonna reserve judgement until I actually see what the electronics do.

For me that’s what made the PKE and the Trap worth buying, despite the accuracy/plastic look downsides they could do so much more than you (or at least I) could build for the same price.

is it jsut me or does the pictures not load?

Just you…they show up fine for me.

I’ll probably get them, hell I already have the Trap and PKE that Matty put out, why not own that too? I’m with Chace on this, I’ll wait to pass judgement until I can see what they actually do myself!

They look like they could be an insanely fun toy. But as a replica prop, they’re simply deplorable.

Hey guys - we got Scott from Matty to take them out and let us play with them today. They’re actually really cool - the Slimer effect is really neat. I took several photos of it, including the Slimer effect. I’ll post them in just a bit once I get them uploaded.

Anyone got some video of these in action?

No videos, but I’ve got a stack of new photos.

Ok kids, here we go:

Here’s Scott from Matty taking them out, and pointing out the new component for the PKE:

Here’s Jonny Ruckus (FunkPunkTwang) trying them on:

Here’s Pete (NHVenkman) with them on:

Here’s the inside of the goggles:

Here’s a shot of Slimer (pretty blurry):

And another:

Here’s the “slimed” effect:

Ok, so here’s what we got - if you buy just the goggles, you’ll just see Slimer, who basically flies around and then slimes you. If you do have the PKE, you can use the component, and you can see both Slimer and the library ghost (though that wasn’t working yet - they said it will be ready to go soon). It does make sounds, but they were also not functional yet, either. It takes only a single AAA battery, and overall the effect was really cool. My photos weren’t very clear, but the Slimer animation was totally clear and it looked pretty realistic up close. Very neat.

Scott told us that the green color was authenticated by Sony as legit, and noted that the color on screen looks different because of the film, etc. Not sure if I buy it, considering the real prop is likely made from actual spec goggles, but whatever - it’s not too far off. We also pointed out to him that the larger side label is likely supposed to be on foil, and he seemed interested to know that. I’m guessing people will want to make their own labels for this, since theirs weren’t as impressive. The bottom knobs are easily interchangeable to go between GB1 and GB2 styles. The headstraps are one size fits all, and elastic to stretch. Scott noted that legally they couldn’t make them adjustable, though I didn’t catch the exact reason why. He was very quick to let us know that this is still not the final product and that they’re still doing final adjustments, etc. to make them as good as possible.

He said they’re totally committed to making more GB props, and didn’t flinch when we asked if a proton pack was a possibility, so who knows? We mentioned doing a KUD or Gigameter, and he seemed open and interested in those choices as well. We’ll see. Really nice guy, and totally happy to let us mess around with everything they had out, including the Hover Board, which is really cool in person (and heavier than I thought it would be). Sounds like a guy who really loves his job and cares about getting things right. He sounded really sad that the action figure line had to die off, and said that he was the one who pushed for the final Courtroom figure/Scoleri brother to get made before it was all done.

As with all of their other props, they aren’t as accurate as the fan-made ones, but the additional stuff they are bringing to the table are really cool, and totally worth the price.
