NYCC 2012: Mattel's Ecto Goggles

It could be Bluetooth. Reliable wireless communication…

Have you seen the trap in person? I think its pretty nice looking, and most of it looks like metal even though its plastic.

We didn’t get a chance to talk to anyone at Mattel today (their booth was absolutely packed full), but I doubt very much that it’s a microphone. That said, I’ve definitely used microphones smaller than a dime - I’ve used ear buds the size of a dime as a microphone before, and I’m sure most mics in cell phones are much smaller than that.

I’m pretty sure it’s not Bluetooth, either. I think the IR theory is the best call.

Pfft. Next you’re going to tell me they make computers smaller than the size of a refrigerator.

But yes, you’re right, I’m stupid, of course they have mics that fit in cellphones.

Do we know what the big door on the bottom of the goggles is for? I would have like to have seen a cleaner solution there, as it really hurts the look.

No clue. I assume that’s to access the electronics. I know it’s not for the battery - that’s on the side.

Yup.Its just dont have the feel and real look like the one I built. I mean there nice, just not for me.

Oh ok, if you built one I can understand yours being better.

That door on the bottom really bugs me. Maybe it’s to swap out cartridges with different ghosts on them. Still, it seems that there must have been a better way to do it, from going in from behind the lenses to having the door take up the whole bottom, so it blends in better. As others have said, it’s one more thing that takes the look from prop replica down to toy. Fortunately, I do like toys, but I prefer prop replicas. Especially for Mattycollector money.

These are not very accurate, but the ghost animations, made them cool enough to play with at events that I was going to get them anyway, plus I might have been able to paint, and or mod them just to make them a little better, but the face that I can’t wear my glasses with it is such a turn off. And, giving matty’s mess ups with the hover board and better understanding the process that goes into making these toys I highly doubt the will be one millimeter of change to body of the goggles before release. This makes me sad, and I’ll have to really consider weather or not to get them :frowning:

The side label printed on foil? I admit that the handful of examples I’ve seen of PVS-5s, the side label hasn’t looked foil to me, wouldn’t make sense to me either as it could draw attention on a battlefield compared to a non-shiny one.

It has it’s downsides, but I see a lot of potential in them. If I have the cash when they go on sale I might opt for two, one which’ll remain in factory condition, the other will be subject to modification. The shorter lense can easily be modified to look closer in proportion to the silver one… and if we can dismantle the main body of the Goggles without breaking them or damaging the electronics, then I bet we could attach a far more accurate method for mounting the harness.

I’m liking what I’m seeing with the animation effects, and I’ll definitely be getting one. The large access panel on the underside isn’t as big an issue as it is with other people, as we don’t always see the underside without a degree of shadow.

While they are doing animations I think it would be cool if they did those lights and numbers inside of the goggles that the goggles had in the movie.

I’ll buy, but won’t wear. It looks so far-off the actual prop and cheap looking. I’d be embarrassed to wear.

Here’s a short walk by of the Goggles. The showfloor ( as well as the Matty booth ) was packed.

I made sure to subscribe to you Capt  love your videos!

Quick question for the guys who’ve had the chance to hold the Goggles in their hands, that black strip on the inside of the faceplate, is that actually rubber?

Yep. It was soft.

I’m all over these, my OCD isn’t as prevalent as some of you guys so I think these are absolutely amazing. Plus, multiple ghosts!!! Awesome!

It seems to me like you can just fill in some spots with bondo, sand off some warning labels, reposition the straps, repaint it and you’re good to go. I don’t really see how that can be any worse than working on a resin kit or something. And these would probably be cheaper and sturdier than resin AND do that ghost thingy.
