Painting the pack difficulty?

Ok,

My brother who is a qualified engineer and is a technology and design teacher. (So building props and working with tools is natural to him) decided to do some work on my pack this weekend.

He glued and bolted on the filler tube, beam line, ion arm block and HGA to the pack.

However the pack hasn’t had it’s primer and paint done yet. My question is, is this going to make the pack more difficult to paint. He said it will make it easier because now we won’t have to paint everythign seperately, but surely all these things being on will make it more difficult to make sure everything is painted evenly?

Has anybody else ever put on some of these things before actually painting the pack?

Also one more question, I’m struggling to figure out what to use for the plug that attaches the split loom to the synchronous generator to the gearbox…Any suggestions?

You will probably have trouble in some spots getting paint in corners and such without overspraying the pieces sticking out.

That is; Unless he’s some kinda painting genius and has a “technique”. If so please take some pics and explain.

The piece in question… are you talking about the vacuum tube above the Clippard? You can use some thick wall 1" PVC or look at Vinny’s metal list to get an idea for what to do with this piece. There are sellers here as well that can make this for you.

You should take charge on your pack. Just my advise, how are you going to learn if he does all the work?

Good luck!

I was thinking that, and from now I am going to take ownership of the entire build. I think I’ll try and figure out a way to remove these peices but I think it’s going to be difficult without destroying the shell. He’s certainly let me down this time!!

I did a bit more digging around the forum after posting this and came across vinnys thread. Think I’m gonna order one from him!

After speaking to my brother though he has said he’s already worked out how we’re gonna spray it. Were going to his friend who is a proffessional carbody sprayer and apparently we can spray the paint that way. Not sure if that will work though, but I could see how it would make it easier

If you know a pro and he can help I would go that route rather than risk damage to your pack.

The trick to painting with things attached like that is to paint the hard to reach and narrow crevices first so that you don’t end up over-spraying in those spots. Go slow and mist in small bursts. The GB2 Semi hero packs were molded with a lot of the attachments already on them and were still painted well.

I’m wondering if there’s anyway for me to paint it myself. Him doing this has annoyed me to the point where I want to take control of everything from here on in myself which would mean I’d have to paint them myself. The one part I’m worried about spraying is the beam line and filler tube. They’ll be the hardest to spray and they’re the ones that really arn’t coming out unfortunately

A single action airbrush is the way to go, you can purchase a small cheap one from the testors company ,there made for scale modeling but will alow you to control the paint alot more and if you dont have a compressor the sell aerosol cans of propellent its not as cheap as a spray can is obviously but if you intend to continue to build props after your pack its worth the investment. .

Just move the pack around so that you can get into all of the crevices. I’ve painted a whole pack when its assembled. It wasn’t easy, but it’s definitely possible. Move the shell around instead of the paint can and it will be fine.

After looking at it recently it should be doable, probably going to be more thorough with the painting which will probably require more paint but whats the price of an extra can of paint!
