That weight sounds wrong as well to me. Our packs have less foam parts (some are electrical boxes) and ours weigh in at under 12 pounds.
A heavy amp and speaker though could weigh 4-6 pounds I guess, and if you used full metal washers for the bumper shock mount, that could easily be a pound or so as well.
Still though thats significantly less them most packs, and the alice frame/kidney pad will make carrying it fairly easy.
I keep considering doing our crank and gear boxes just like this to replace the electrical boxes I originally used.. nice to know they can come out looking great!
Only real event issue you might have is the ion arm.. people always want to tug on it, and being foam that’ll snap right off.
Excellent build!
I’m surprised they ban the foam in CA.. do they have alternate colors available? (I’ve seen it in pink, blue and green) They may be different grades, or chemical variations.
Home Depot and Lowe’s also do ship online to store.. maybe you CA guys could sneak it in that way?
I would actually be surprised if the DID offer it online. 99.999999% of the people that buy it are using it for it’s intended purposes. Plus, no one would pay $90 in shipping for an $11 item you can get down the road.
For the record, our local Home Depots carry it.
tatawaki, you did an excellent job with this build for the materials you used. Well done.
tatawaki, I have to ask, what other foam projects are you doing in your front yard? btw awesome job, looking at the finished product, I’d never guess what it was made of.
tombstones, and misc halloween items, also looking at doing some animatronics for next year (talking pumkins, moving tombstones, pop out creatures for scaring people etc.)
Wow. thats a great job. you cant really tell its foam. Im the UK, looking for that foam to try out your method. So it’s just insulation foam im looking for?
Even if you dont do a full tutorial on your foam pack, a short tutorial would be great. Maybe showing 1 piece from foam stage through cutting/shaping and painting with a few extra pics. I know I’d read it!
Insulation faom in the US comes in two main types: Pellet “styrofoam” style, and this denser foam type. In the US at least, it comes in blue, yellow and green, and you can find varying thicknesses.
I posted quite a few tips for working with in in my build thread, linked in my sig.
Just curious how much of the rosco foam coat did you buy/use? I really like how you did this and plan on attempting this myself with either a Wii (in game) style pack or another Real Ghostbusters one and that foam coat isn’t cheap.
Half our packs are insulation foam, (I did 2) and one large sheet is easily enough for probably 3 packs. I still have 1/4 of a sheet left, and have used leftovers from it for several other smaller projects as well.
