This is my first post in the world of GHOSTBUSTERS FANS, so I apologize if I ask some of the same questions that have been asked before.
I am currently working on a proton pack of my own. Using foam, wood and various parts, I am hoping to create my own variation of the classic pack using the plans I have seen on here as a guide. There is just a couple of things I am currently having problems with.
Since metal is out of the question, I am looking to see how to give it that “metal” look when it comes to foam and wood. I know I have read on here about using metallic paint to give it that look but should I go with that or should I go with something else?
I want to do a “Power Indicator” similar to the one on the side of the proton pack (the blue LED bar). I would like to make my own but I am not sure how to go about and doing it. The box part is easy but what kind of lights should I use and to get it to act the same way as the one in the movie?
If anyone can help me out with this, I would most appreciate it. Thank you very much!
One way to get the metal look is to use a silver undercoat or primer and after you’ve painted the black over the top just rub back certain areas with sandpaper or scotchbrite to get the worn-in metal look.
Or if you’re talking about removing woodgrain or texture from whatever material you’re using, just apply a thin layer of bondo and sand it smooth. It’s a good way of covering the joins in the wood as well.
I can’t really help with your lights question because I cheated and bought my electronics kit from Exoray
Welcome, Kevin! If you aren’t going for accuracy, see if you could pick up one of those blue scanner lights for cars. That’s what all the packs I’ve built have. You’ll probably have to find them on ebay as auto parts stores seem to be down sizing their custom lighting sections. They are fairly cheap but you’ll have to hook up a 9V connector and possibly a toggle switch. I just disconnect the battery when mines not in use. Hope this helps! Also be sure to introduce yourself in the introduction forum. Good Luck!
Hiya DarkSpectre! Thanks for the warm welcomes! I appreciate that!
As for the lights being accurate… they dont have to be. To be truthful I would like to get one that has four of them that go up and down like you would see on studio equipment to register loudness of sound. But that might be a project unto itself as I have less than a month to finish this up for a convention. I know, I know, I should’ve started WAAAAAY in advance. I didnt know if I was going to have it at all due to financial/difficulty at the time. This will teach me to be better in the future, right?
I was curious, DarkSpectre, do you have any suggestions as to which brand I should use for the Scanner Lights or perhaps what company/store that might have a good set. Just out of curiosity. Thank you so much for helping me out with this, I really appreciate it!
As for the introduction of myself, I shall do that soon, DarkSpectre. I am hopin’ I will be able to do that once I have this project finished and be able to show everyone what I have been working on. Hopefully. Wish me luck!
Ahhh… Sounds good, RickH! I will try and look into the paints and perhaps the bondo too. I am hoping to make a more “metal” version of the pack in the future, but this will help! Thank you again for your help! I really appreciate it! As for the lights, it is all right. If I had the money, I might’ve done the same thing! chuckles But hey, I am hopin’ to make my own. So we shall see. Wish me good luck, guys!
I have another question, and I apologize again if this has been asked or stated previously, but does anyone know where is the best place to get some cheap supplies and what might be best for constructing the pack? Thank you!
Thanks again everyone! I do hope to have photos and a status report as the days go by! Take care and thank you!
