studios generally don’t hold on their props very much, ends up in crew hands very quick. I’ve seen that happen a lot, its sometime very easy to identify the prop from simple screen grabs. Helps us propmakers quite a bit…
H13, would you be willing to take pictures in specific angles of the proton packs? hunting for reference shots is sometime a real pain for replica builders.
This is a fairly bigtime overgeneralization, on both counts.
I collect original props almost exclusively, so please trust that I know what I’m talking about. I have owned a number of GB items over the course of my collecting career, including several released by Michael Gross, the film’s producer (released through auction @ PiH). To date, only a handful of original GB items have EVER surfaced in private hands, with only a few of those known to have been used onscreen.
Sony is known for holding onto their pieces; they maintain an extensive archive that includes more than one exceptional GB item. This was less the case at the time Ghostbusters was filmed, but the idea that crew members could simply walk out with gear is still somewhat far-fetched (hence my overt skepticism). If I am proved wrong, great; I would be thrilled to see, for example, a privately-owned original Venkman suit, as no one has heard that it was “out there.” But until I see some pics, I think my questioning is reasonable.
Even futher than the above, screen-matching items in private hands is often EXTREMELY difficult; I know collectors that go to amazing lengths to determine production use of original pieces. The issue becomes more problematic as the hobby grows; as more crew members understand the value/demand for production pieces, the more we see “original” props enter the market…these pieces are of course often never used onscreen, but simply made for prodution (there’s an appeal to that, but it’s not for everyone), yet sold as original pieces.
Even with pieces that we KNOW were used onscreen, screen-matching can be exceptionally hard. Take, for example, the foamie stunt pack that has been auctioned several times over the last few years. Think you’re gonna screen-match that, particularly with the shape it’s in? Think again.
The bottom line is, finding original Ghostbusters props is tough enough; to think that there are one or two out there that no one knew about is exciting but questionable. Go ahead, prove me wrong! Pics pics pics.

OMNI is great but i dont like it as much as the time or atlantic. Thats awesome that you use to have that. It must have been hard to let that item go
