I was given as a gift what I believe to be an original proton pack from the first Ghostbuster’s movie. The prop had working lights and was not in the best shape when I got it…
I have a pretty good idea that this was one of the original’s since the guy who gave it to me collected really great stuff from a ton of movies. He had some great taste and some great props.
How do I find the value of something like that?

The Proton Packs from the first film were reused for the second film.
That’s an awfully nice gift. I would of course, like the rest of the community love to see pictures.
However, a fair warning…

by putting it on ebay with an extremely high reserve, but if you have no proof of it being authentic, it wont go for much
Well, the guy is very generous… and very nice. But ultimately I think the reason he gave it to me was he knew I didn’t know what to do with it and I would keep it. I am trying to figure out if I should restore it… Leave it alone or what. Right now I have it in a tub because I am afraid it keeps degenerating when I touch it.

Pretty cool and alright for a fan pack, if it wasn’t falling apart but definitely not one from the movie… 
I would be confused why the guy who had the original nostromo, one of the original alien suits (not to mention all the original molds), the original table from Young frankenstein, and countless other movie originals would be duped into getting a poor imitation of prop?

Sorry to say.. that is not a real pack.
It is probably a mid 1990’s vintage replica… almost looks like one that was built by Norm Gagnon, or by his v2 plans.

That’s assuming he was duped.
There’s two ways it could have gone, either he isn’t as clued in on the props he gets (I would be interested in seeing photos of his other props were that possible), and that he got the Pack, was informed it was screen-used and didn’t bother to compare it.
Or, he knew it wasn’t real. That may have even been the reason why he was passing it onto you.
Sorry that you aren’t getting what you were told you’d be getting, but hopefully you’ll fix it up. How extensive is the lighting system? Are there lights in the gun and Pack, and are any of them animated?
i couldn’t get pics of his other stuff. But the lights on the handles and pack did light up. The level lights were animated and did increase as the knob was turned. I think the batteries are dead and I am not sure where they would be to replace them. They worked for about a day.
I agree I was surprised as well.
But wasn’t about to look a gift horse in the mouth especially since it may have been something more valuable then it is.
Oh well, Now I am not too restricted in repairing it.

Wait a minute…you mean the table that the creature is created on? If i’m not mistaken, Mel Brooks used the equipment from the original Universal Frankenstein. So if that’s the case, that thing must be worth a pretty penny. Assuming that it’s real, that is.
As for the pack, it’s obvious that it’s not a real screen used pack. So your friend may have been dupped.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say most of his stuff, if not all, is going to be replicas
Look, i want to defend this guy, (not that I really have to)
first he has been a big name in the industry for 20+ years. Has worked on 500+ films and I’ve seen collectors come in and buy some of his smaller not as cool (in my opinion)props for over 100,000 bucks. Ive seen John Carpenter come in and marvel at his collection, Steven Spielberg, Frank Darabond… well a ton of people.
Some of his stuff may be facsimile’s but, I doubt most of his stuff is.
As for this prop… well maybe I was confused and excited.
Or Maybe like someone else said, he knew what it was and that’s why he gave it away.
In any regard he’s pretty smart. I’m sure he knows whats up.
