Proton Pack for my 2.5 year old son.

That’s some great work!

What printer are you using and is it ABS or PLA?

It’s all PLA and I’m using a Ditto+ from Tinkerines.

Very impressive work. I can’t even being to imagine how much work went into the digital model. I look forward to watching the rest of this build.

Thanks, it took a lot longer than it should have. About 2-3 months only working on it on my lunch hour at work. Essentially building it up piece by piece. I couldn’t have done it without stefans plans and all the great reference on this site.

amazing build with the 3d printer!! i love the bowser costume as well!! the bowser is 3d printed as well?!

Thank you! No the Bowser costume was built using EVA foam, I used pepakura to unfold a 3d model. For the skin I coated it with an elastomeric paint and then airbrushed the details.

I’ll be doing something similar for Stay Puft but I’m going to use a softer foam and a lycra fabric for the skin stretched around the foam.

Nice! The gantry design is what I based my second printer off of and it works really well, can’t wait to see it finished.

Been a while since I posted an update. All my builds are slowly trucking along. I’ve gotten most of my sons pack printed. I’ve started to clean up a few of the pieces.

To the right is my wife’s pack. It’s coming out a lot cleaner. I don’t think there will be nearly as much finishing work.

I’ve started building stay puft as well. I have two hands and a forearm built. The next step will be to skin the foam to see how that comes out.

Here’s a screen cap of what the model currently looks like.

that’s just amazing!

Wow! I don’t know how I missed this thread last month…Glad it popped up today though.

I’m excited to see how this all turns out.

Looks like the printer does a great job and you just have to sand out the rough spots it leaves behind. Or is there a bit more to it?

Thank you!

Essentially that’s all there is to the finishing, sand, fill, prime, repeat. The larger chunk of the work has been building the 3d model. There’s also a lot to think about in prepping the model. Trying to slice it in the best areas to minimize the amount of supports that it will generate, but at the same time minimizing any seams.. I’ve definitely been slicing up some of the pieces differently for my wife’s pack.

Keep us updated, I’m really interested to see how you skin Staypuff.

Will do. Right now the plan is to essentially upholster it with a cotton lycra blend. The hand is the first up so I will post pictures once it’s done, hopefully later this week.

I haven’t had a lot of time to experiment with the skinning but I’m still chipping away at everything.

Just finished up one of stay putts shoulders tonight. I like the way this is shaping up.

I’ve started making progress on my sons wand as well. I’ve hot glued the pieces together for now. I’m not sure if that will be the final method of attachment as I do have all the screw holes modeled in.

Are you a wizard??

I’ve always wondered what kind of pack frame a small pack would be attached to. My 3 year old wants a pack something fierce, but I’d be concerned with what kind of frame to use that would fit him. Obviously a standard adult sized LC frame won’t work. The kidney belt becomes a knee belt!

Hahah, I’m only half wizard.

My plan for the frame right now is to just build something custom. I’ll probably use the Alice frames as a blueprint and just make a smaller version.

That stay puft arm is amazing. What’s the underlying structure keeping it all together? How do?

That really is wizardry.

Thanks, right now it’s just open cell foam hot glued together. It’s pretty squishy right now and kinda does its own thing.

I think what I’m going to do is add EVA foam ribs inside to better retain the shape but still keep some flex.

My Bowser I did last year was all EVA foam but it had no give to it at all. It was so hard to move around in so I’m trying to avoid that this year.

what is the proton gun made of ?

The proton gun and the pack are both made out of extruded PLA from my printer. The two different colors is because I ran out of one kind of filament. I prefer the clear it produces a cleaner print but my supplier isn’t getting another shipment til September so I’m making do with the grey.
