October is upon us, what the hell happened? My brain is still somewhere back in 2010, but I digress…
I’m building my first Proton Pack, and I’ve hit the point now where I need a light kit. I’m actually building two proton packs, but I haven’t done much for the second one other than assemble parts. I ordered the AJ Quick/GBFans/Ishippartsyesterday sound board, and have been holding out for the associated plug in light kits, but I’m at the point now where I feel the need to buy a separate light kit and integrate with the GhostGuy board.
I’m getting ready to post a build thread for those that are interested, but I’ve been waiting until I actually had some decent results before posting. If I had a dollar for every post that started with “I’m building a Proton pack” and ended with “Any updates? It’s been 9 years since you posted this” I’d have quite a few dollars.
There seems to be 3 popular options; R2Devo, Crix, and Jupiter Electronics. In the interest of brevity; cost be damned, which one is the “best?” I don’t really care how much it costs, I just want the best one. Obviously the word best is subjective, so I’m inviting opinion and reason into the conversation :). From what I have seen thus far, I am leaning towards the Crix setup but am totally open to suggestion if there is good logic behind it.
Thanks!
Dan
p.s. Not to entirely place lips on cheeks, but has anyone else noticed that AJ ships parts before you actually order them? In a market where it’s acceptable to ship product 12 months after it’s ordered, I am extremely pleased with the results.
Ain’t that the truth.
I have Crix lights. I’ve only built 1 pack and this is the only kit I used so I can’t really compare to the others.
With Crix, I’ve noticed some people either have trouble contacting him or he seems to slip in and out of touch. In my case, I sent him a PM and he responded within hours with payment info. A few days went by, I waited patiently, then I asked what the hold up was. There was some confusion as to whether he shipped mine or not, but once he quickly figured it out, it was in the mail and arrived 3 days later. He had consistently satisfactory communication, though I did have to bug him a few times to get it shipped.
The pack and wand light kits work very well. You can adjust the speed of the pack lights (the power cell and cyclotron can be adjusted individually) and if you have a good battery they are vibrant and beautiful. I had a little trouble getting the power cell light mounted because of the way the board is laid out.
The wand lights are great but there were a few small errors in the manufacturing process that scared me. A few of the lights were wired backwards. A pretty easy fix, but still something I wasn’t expecting. The gun lights are bright and very easy to set up. It also came with all the wire you will need (so did the pack lights), as well as a complete set of switches pre-wired and ready to go. This is a big time saver. The pack and gun lights can be ran off the same 9v battery.
I had a slight difficulty getting the gun light kit to fit. The switches wouldn’t fit in the TC 3.0 trigger box, and the ear light switch was too long to fit. I had to make the ear light switch inoperable to get it to fit. I’d say someone with more experience would be able to squeeze it in better.
Also the Crix kit I ordered came with the power cell and cyclotron lenses. They look great and kept me from having to deal with another seller, which gives you peace of mind (re: 6 month turn around for some people).
I’m very satisfied with my lights. They all work well and look great.
