I want to think of way it was needed in the Ghostbusters’ universe. I understand why it was from a game-play mechanic, but let’s think of why Egon made this happen. Not someone at Terminal Reality decided to make the game-play a little more interesting
Personally, I think this is because they have been tweaking the design of the pack after the Vigo incident. This newer version has a light higher output energy the the older models. Thus a more active cooling system had to be developed to keep the pack from going critical after being fired for a period of time.
The quickest way is just to eject the core rods and let them air cool. Shutting the pack down allowing the system to cool entirely.
If there hasn’t been too much heat generated blowing the excess heat off as steam with a short vent. This doesn’t seem to make a lot sense to me, as you are basically ejecting the coolant for the core. Short term yes it will cool it right then and there. But soon enough it will not be able to cool itself just idling.
Just my thoughts on the subject, curious to see what others have to say about it.
It makes no sense from a technological standpoint. Especially as the cyclotron would not be where any nuclear material would sit. The most probable location of the control rod for a proton pack is in the booster tube.
Agreed. The basic principal was this was a extremely dangerous untested prototype with cool upgrades so it makes sense for Egon and Ray to have built safeguards into it. Aside from venting, this is evidenced at the end of the game in the last cinematic when Egon announces the release the cross stream governors and the fact if you don’t vent, the pack simply shorts out and resets anyway. Ray even ‘joked’ the pack prototypes packed enough power to blow them all the way to New Jersey if things went wrong. The basic idea is the notion Egon and Ray are constantly tinkering away and trying to anticipate future threats poised by the supernatural.
I agree it could be explained as necessary as the result of increasing the pack’s power output. Let’s not confuse nuclear accelerators with nuclear reactors, though.
Another real world factor not taken into account is the steam vented would be radioactive and the very ejection of the core rods would contaminate the immediate vicinity. Anyone using a pack with these features would get butt cancer and start glowing in the dark brighter than ectoplasm in no time at all!
It makes sense that anything generating that much energy would also create a lot of heat. Of course in real life it would more than likely burn a hole in your back, but hey, whatever…
