Hey all, I have been lucky enough to help CaptCyan test a few of his projects. I was also able to get my hands on a few decals for my figures to give them that extra umph!
Lets start with the Mega trap!
I didnt get a lot of pictures of this process, simply because it is fairly straight forward.. First I washed the model to get rid of any release grease left over.. I primed the entire model with Citadel paint Abaddon Black (formally know as Chaos Black). This serves two purposes. One to help the other paint to stick and the second reason is to darken the orange paint i used with out having to mix paint..
you can see here a lot of the black is showing through the paint. its just part of the process, I had to several light coats of orange to get it where i wanted it. I used Citadel Troll Slayer Orange.
The hardest part of this project was cutting out the caution stripes so that the decal fit the model on the domed section. Once i got the decal cut out so it fit. I used Micro-sol decal setting solution so it would hug the curvature.
That’s the Mega Traps new home till i can get my hands on Ray with a pack..
Now for the Tobins..
I wanted to take extra special care on this project! So i spent about 30 minutes at my local hobby shop comparing paint colors to the decal. I know it doesn’t look like the colors match very well, but its just a trick of the flash on my camera. the Colors look a lot better in person.. I ended up choosing Citadel Ungor Flesh for the pages and Citadel Rhinox Hide for the spine..
(just a note. I was able to chose from a lot of different ghost decals to put in the book, but I choose the spud)
I started with Painting the edges, next to the spine of the book, and the spine the dark brown to ensure that you couldn’t see the edge of the decal.
I then painted the sides of the pages and along the edge of the page the light tan color to help blend in the decal.. I should mention at this point that the decals are slightly oversized so you will have to cut them down. I cut from the inside edge of the pages, and the bottom to help hide the edge.
After the decal set, I dry brushed the Rhinox brown on the edges to give it the weathered old book look.
as for the cover decals, i used the old Citadel paint Shinning gold for the spine. I am not sure what its new equivalent is.
Again i had to trim the decal down, but this time i cut from the out side edge of the decal, since the i had a lot more edge detail to cut away from on that side of the decal. The spine was a little tricky. You have to cut the spine portion of the decal into pieces that fit on the model, so there are a total of 3 pieces on the spine.. I didn’t even try to place a decal in between the gold raised part of the model..
Here are some “action” shots. I Think egon approves
I would highly recommend that you have an exacto knife for this project, it made my life a lot easier.
here are just some shots of the decals i placed on the guys.. Enjoy!
This decal set too quickly on me, When i get time i am going to scape it off and replace it, but it works for now
I hope you enjoy this as much i as did making it.. let me know what ya think!
