I would like to put laser pens on my thrower for added effect. I think it would look cool at costume contests, especially in bars.
Here is my first, and easiest, idea to attach one laser to the thrower:
Pardon the Paint job, but I think you get the idea. I want to mount a green laser inside the grip of the thrower, then activate it by pressing something on the grip. I have 2 green lasers and a red one, and think it would be great if I could attach them all, and activate them with the push of a button.
I don’t know if I could wire all the laser pens together somehow, as I don’t know hardly anything about soldering and electronics. But, at least with this idea I could get away with at least one laser. It would be ideal if I could put the pen inside the thrower, but i don’t have enough know-how.
If anyone has done this before, or has any more ideas/enhancements, please let me know! Thanks!
First, unless the bar is smoky, all you’re gonna see is a dot on the wall. And second, you don’t want to be shining lasers where they can hit people in the eyes. Especially green ones. And especially in a dark bar where everyone’s pupils will be fully dialated.
Stick with LED’s. You can get super bright ones which won’t blind people.
I’m not planning on shooting people in the eyes with it. And I highly doubt I will blind anyone with a 5mW green laser. LEDs are cool, but I think lasers would be pretty neat, IMO.
Hardly a new idea, my light kit have had lasers since day one and the idea was around longer then that…
To be bluntly honest 99% of this is media hype without any scientific backing in regards to low powered “laser pointer” type devices…
I use an under 5 mW Class IIIa laser pointer module in my light kits, and for the most part they are deemed safe for public use (at least in the US, the UK outlaws them), in public use means just that out in public without any controls…
From the only scientific backed evidence I could locate in regards to eye damage from a Class IIIa laser it would take 10 seconds of constant uninterrupted exposure to a single point in the eye before any damage ‘might’ occur… This would have to be a deliberate act as you would have to immobilize the laser and person, stop the eyeball itself from moving, and stop blinking for 10 seconds, then maybe something might happen…
Now yes there are more powerful lasers and yes those WILL cause issues, a little common sense goes a long way simply don’t look at the damn things… Even the new super bright LEDs are capable of eye damage just like a flash cube on a camera…
Again lasers in the ‘laser pointer’ power range are mostly safe, but go beyond that and yes damage and even fire are a reality…
Even if it is perfectly safe, I still don’t think it would work well. A laser pointer is going to put out a razor thin beam which, while very itense at the focal point, will be virtually invisible traveling across even in a smoky room. Have you ever used one of those laser levels? They form a line on the wall by scanning the beam across it. But between the laser and the wall, the beam is invisible.
You need a lot of smoke and a powerful laser to get a highly visible beam like you see in laser light shows.
I think you would have much better results with a simple LED flashlight with a tightly focused beam. An LED flashlight actually puts out more light than a handheld laser pointer, but because it’s a wide beam and the photons aren’t all at the same frequency, it doesn’t endanger people’s eyes. I can focus my little magnight with a regular lamp in it to a one foot side circle at 10 feet, and an LED would be even more focused. You can get ones which have a 14 degree field of view. To give you an idea how tight a beam that is, my maglight probably has a beam with about a 45 degree FOV. So you’d be able to get a one foot circle at 40 feet with a 14 degree high intensity LED.
Plus something else to consider.. you get some lout that’s half drunk, and gets a laser is his eyes, and gets all up in your face about it, and decide to push you down on your proton pack.. YIKES!!!
www.wickedlasers.com They have some nice ones. My buddy bought a green one, and you can actually see the beam from it in a completely non-smoke filled room, but they are also quite powerful. Shine the bad boy at a balloon and it will pop. Not cheap either, but they do have some cool videos on the site last time i was there if you want to check them out. I DO NOT advise anything of this nature in a proton pack, however.
