I am building three packs for my kids and need to make as light as poosible. I want to use the craft foam pieces you can get at like Micheals.But, I am not sure what glue to use to bond multiple layers together or to be able to secure to either wood or plastic for the motherboard. And, is their a type of bondo mix that can be used on the foam to make it smooth? LIke car bondo or even the all purpose bondo. Does it one work better then the other?
Bondo will melt foam! You can use PL5000 construction adhesive to glue styrofoam sheets together, as far as making it smooth you can use drywall filler and latex primer to seal before painting.

You could use foam core although the edges would need to be sealed with something like elmer’s glue before you spray painted them.
You could also use foamy (or whatever you call it) and after it’s glued down brush it with primer paint (SO NOT USE SPRAY PRIMER - WILL MELT THE MATERIAL). After that it should be ok to spray paint black. I love this stuff especially the thicker kind.

I used to get sheets of foam core at hobby lobby, but I’m sure someone here can direct you to some place that you can get it cheaper. Also, be sure to fill whatever you build with spray foam insulator to give it some support because it doesn’t take much to collapse foam core in, especially if you’re putting it in the hands of kids.
Are you talking about the green foam? I would advise against using it if so. Its highly toxic. Also you can coat foam in a few layers of wood glue to seal it, then bondo and paint to your hearts content.
No not the green foam, just the plain white foam. Most of that is perfect sizes.
If its the kind that’s made up of what looks like several little balls compacted together, then I wouldn’t recommend. It doesn’t cut or sand too nicely. Def 2" insulation foam from Lowes or Home Depot is the best route for a foam based pack.
i think your talking foamboard. which can be found at michaels for like two or three bucks a sheet of 22x 28. its what my pack was almost entirely made of and its super light.
OH, foamcore, thats a different story. Very nice material to work with.
Yeah thats the stuff. You can also buy it in premade circles and triangles.

Bought all the foamcore from a picture framing business. As they use it to back some posters and what not.
I painted it with flat black acrylic enamel. Just used a sponge to dab it around, less brush lines. Using a ‘paint’ instead of a ‘spraypaint’ you don’t have to seal the sides of the foam core.
Wow, I was really wondering how a foamcore pack would turn out, but that’s clean. I wouldn’t have guessed that it was foam without you saying.
