Paco builds a proton pack...

This is my latest work. After months of indecision, I finally settled on foamcore due to the fact that it’s easy, cheap, and good for what im aiming for. Since I already had a foamcore sync made months back it drastically reduced the job.

Here’s a shot wit the sync wit the gearbox and the booster tube section.

notice the red. its that putty that bondo makes. still waiting for it to dry.

Feel free to comment. Tips will be useful.

I think you are on the right track so far Paco… I’m sure you’ll get more comments as you get further into the build.

by the way, I love the title of the thread"paco build a proton pack". Sounds like a childrens story book. I can just see the book cover right now! somebody on here needs to photoshop that.

Looking good so far Paco. I just recently finished building a Foam core pack and thought I’d share some of the things I’ve learned.

First, tools. I had originally started with the standard straight bladed exactoknife and discovered that it didn’t always cut the foam properly. It sometimes would clump up and pull chunks of foam out from between the paper layers. I learned that a curved blade like the image shown below would cut nice clean edges when held at a 45 degree when cutting.

Obviously you’ll want to be using a metal straight edge if you have one, but I’m sure you already are.

Next, I notice you are using bondo fill to fill the exposed foam edges. I started that way but later realized a much cleaner way with less effort and went back and made all my parts this way.

I cut all the edges to my foam board like the pictures below. That way not only did I not need to fill the exposed foam edges, I also had two sides to apply epoxy to give the piece strength.

Also, Like I mentioned above. I used 2 part 5 minute epoxy that you can get at any hardware store. The reason I did this is its strong and it sets quickly so I could move on quickly.

Here was my end product. Wish I had a better pic.

You may already be doing some of these things, but I figured I’d throw all this up for anyone else reading this thread who may be thinking of making a foam core pack themselves.

Good luck with your build.

well i have been using the technique of cutting inside the corners to make the edges but there’s always room for improvement.

Nice job so far man! The parts you have done already look really sharp. (The Spacer was the biggest headache for me and yours looks great!) Looking forward to seeing more…

having a little prob guys. the putty didnt dry. whenever i touch it, it comes off rubbed onto my fingers. here’s a pic to illustrate the prob. guys wanna help out on this one? its that glazing spot putty for those who would ask.

read the label, do you think you might have put it on too thick and humidity and temperature could affect it.? that could make drying time longer. how long has it been sitting there?

It’s not the red liquid you’re supposed to mix with bondo is it…? (I hope not)

it is… ahh ■■■■. i thought it was the same stuff as the spot putty. now gilpin this gonna dry in a couple of days or not at all? damn dude. then i can try to take it off.

Is that spot putty or like lordgilpin said is it the hardener that comes with the bondo? If so the hardener will not harden on its own it has to be mixed with the bondo in order to harden.

start wiping!!! I can recommend a few brand of shop towels if you’re interested.

Bummer about the bondo hardner. If you can’t wipe it all off you are lucky that foam core is cheap and if need be you could rebuild those parts. Good luck.

true, i still have a lot of foamcore lying around. two sheets in fact.

HAHAHA HOLY SHIT! YES!

¡VIVA EL PACO!

Lmao! Where did you find that pic and what was he holding before.

Google “Paco and the Giant Chile Plant”

Another thing, spot and glazing putty eats through foam and it’ll never dry properly if it’s in contact with it. Anytime I had exposed foam, I either coated it with brush on primer or wood filler to act as a buffer for the bondo. And I did pretty much what GhostbusterPM did except cut my edges at 45 degree angles and reenforced with square dowels because he’s 100% right, the less exposed foam the smoother you can get the edges.

There’s my kindof build thread if you want to check out how I did mine, though admittedly it doesn’t show a whole lot of the actual process…

THAT IS FREAKIN’ AWESOME

XD

Glad you like it. I made a slightly cleaned up version and posted it in “Fan Art” if you are interested.

And I borrowed the wand from V71’s pack plans, I didn’t draw it from scratch.
