Hey all. I am finally starting my first pack. It’s a RGB pack for a 4 year old’s Birthday. I plan on making it mostly out of Foam core, PVC piping and blue Walmarts Camping Pad. I am wondering though if anyone here happens to have the dimensions available to the original KennerProton Pack toy? Just so I can get an idea of what the size was for it. Any info would be grateful. Also If anyone knows a great place to pick up some cheap solid yellow tubing that would be pretty damn spectacular as well! Thanks in advance!!

YES! Thank You! that is perfect, and an image to boot! I worked on a small scaled down frame last night. Now I think I must trim it slightly. Excellent! You would not happen to know where to pick up some inexpensive yellow tubing would you? Thanks again for your help!
As you probably guessed, I replaced the kid’s pack tubing (saving the original, worn tubing). I can probably get some for you at Canal Rubber in a week or so if you can’t find a local source or internet order shipping seems too much of a “hose” job.
Thanks, I think I may have found a solution to my tubing problem, suppposedly there may be some at the local hardware store. And also I had seen some recently at Big Lots. Looks like I am gonna have to take a ride soon. thanks for the link though! much appreciated!
Not sure if foamcore would stand up to the punishment of a 4yr old. I know you looking to make it light for him, but its going to sacrifice strength and durability. A child would almost need a rubber stunt pack to be able to with stand the inevitable dropping, running into walls, swinging around and clipping something with the pack, jumping and rolling, the “I let my little friend billy wear it and he went ape s*** with it”, and not to mention the “Sorry daddy I left it out in the yard during a rain storm” that may occur.
Oh yes heh heh thank you and yes I completely agree and I am completely aware of that. I have what I like to call the skeleton done. It’s pretty damn thick and sturdy Then a thick layer of padding will cover the whole pack. If it doesn’t last forever. I won’t be heart broken. It’s my first attempt at a pack of any kind so I get to use it as a learning experience to hopefully someday build my own. Plus its fun! heh Once I get closer to being done I will be posting some pics of the process. So you can get a better idea of where I am going with this.
Oh ok haha. When I was typing that I was wonder how possible it would be to make a negative mold of a proton pack and then fill the mold with expandable foam. Kinda like what they use in the auto industry for seat padding… or better yet get your hands on some Nerf ! Then you could use fabric paint to detail it. Proton pack by day…Comfy pillow by night. Can’t wait to see some pics . Good luck.
That would be a awesome way to make some packs made completely out of the foam you mentioned. I will probably have some pics up of what I have thrown together in the next week or two. stay tuned!
Here is what I ended up doing with the pack with the materials I could get together within a time constraint. The pack is pretty light due to it being made mostly out of blue Walmart Camping pad.. It is also very sturdy. I was originally going to try to make a movie style pack. But I could only find blue so I settled for a kind of RGB, Movie Style Hybrid. I presented the pack at a birthday party over the weekend. And every kid wanted one after that present was opened. I was very pleased that he loved it! I definitely recommend this method if you are working on a pack for the kids. Its pretty inexpensive, safe and sturdy. I wish I had some night pics… Because the end tube lights up and acts as a sort of flashlight for the night.
Thanks guys, I know it’s not completely accurate to any of the packs or the trap, But I think that might be my next attempt at a full size accurate pack. I thought it was kind of neat to see how Ghostbusters still works today as it did 25 years ago with kids. pretty nifty, I have seen some of your work, so I definitely value your opinions. thanks again!
Thanks, Looks like I will be making another one sometime soon for a buddy’s kid. Should be easier this time. I also might try to go a little bit more accurate to the RGB pack this time around. I will post some pics once I get it going. Thanks again!
