Rocketeer props.

Isn’t Keoni Super into rocketeer? It’s him or someone else that has a full rocketeer cosutme on proptopia, i thought they were a member here also?

Anyways that thing does look great! Keep up the good work

i stay away from proptopia. not a good fanbase from what i hear. an example would be, if i were a member, you wouldnt see my build process, just the pics of the final and i wouldnt answer any questions.

Worngly informed, They do answer questions and such. there just isn’t a lot of build threads but they are there. takes a while to get used to because they are two completely different websites ( here and the 'topia)

in my own experience emailing people that have proptopia memberships, thats how ive been treated. i even offer trade like help with ideas for stuff they’re working on if theyd like. i also let them know ive made my own stuff for quite some time.

this patamanor guy on flickr, has the comedian costume, i emailed him asking how he did it, telling him i worked on mine all year to get 80 percent passable, and i cant figure out how he did his. just to point me in the right direction. that email was 2 weeks ago. and if comedian carl is there too? my opinion is only cemented. because i emailed him and never received a response when i first started my comedian costume.

but i’ll give you the benefit of the doubt.

as for a pack update.

we have the button figured out, as far as turning the fan on and how to wire the batteries to it. now we need to finish the rocket pack, so i can actually start to wire it up. debating putting sound in it, but i dont know how. so fan and lights will have to do.

If you just want the startup turbine whine you could hook up an MP3 player and a radioshack white amp to the button. You’d have to find the turbine sound though.

There seems to be a fair amount of Rocketeer talk on the RPF, enough that I notice it at least. I don’t really follow it so I can’t say how great the info/discussion is.

RPF?

The Replica Prop Forum: http://www.therpf.com/

Only opens registration a few times a year like proptopia but unlike them you can stiil access most of the interesting stuff without logging in. I’ve yet to figure out how to get a login at Proptopia or if it’d even be worth trying.

Proptopia is worth signing up when it does get reopened… I can’t say the same for the RPF. The people who run that board have a questionable set of standards, and seem more than willing to overlook a recaster’s past.

I do not believe that the information restriction at Proptopia is deliberate, that it only happens because that’s how that type of forum works when you’re not signed in… at one point you couldn’t view the posts here when you weren’t logged in.

There has been some Rocketeer stuff discussed at Proptopia (one about some of the film-used props on display at Disney World, Florida) and two costume attempts (from what I recall).

One issue relating to Rocketeer that was discussed at length, was how one of the RPF members was over-charging for Rocketeer harness buckles he was claiming were authentic, but turned out to be reproductions he’d made.

as for an update, we figured out the switch. it had all these different prongs, and only two of them worked. go figure.

my buddy’s going to get on bondoglassing the missle ■■■■ this week, and i’ll talk him into using some poster board as some faux plates. then we do the directional fins, and upper body fin thingies. after we get it put together and paint it black so i can see if its perfect, then i wire that sucker up.

and in the mean time i have to revisit my comedian armor, i have to add that bumpy looking shape to it. and its going to be a hell of a nasty lady.

i actually found a post on rpf that i used for some of my research. i didnt know it was from rpf, so, i’ll wait to join up there when i hear its open.

RPF actually sounds like my kind of place on that standard alone. i like recasters, you pay closer to whatever it is, should actually cost that way and because of that it looks like it might be more casual of a prop building base. **i dont care where my part comes from, as long as its cheap and works.

**

i dont want to hear crying about “hard work” from shell makers and supporters. i know the game, they admitted it here and were cheered. which i think is a dirty shame that people keep buying shells for the astronomical price, considering part of that price is paying for the buck that is paid off(and they complain they dont make money or barely break even, math 400, when you can get materials for under 160 at home depot). give me a vac or recast shell any day, those guys arent full of ■■■■.

Actually the RPF is crazy-strict on recaster-outing. Boards change over the years so it may have been different in the past but these days just a whif of the “r-word” and a thread will blow up within 10 minutes. I’ve been a semi-regular there for a few years now and in general I’ve found it to be a great group of very knowledgeable and helpful people and some of the most amazing prop projects I’ve ever seen.

i dont know where i left off of this, but the helmet is painted and has lenses now. and a booboo on de chin.

the jetpack is painted with this bumpy silver paint, i couldnt stop my buddy before he did it. so i have to sand it all down. im also going to be refilling the foam with bondohair so i can make it smooth and solid and more round.

fun note, when i turn the fan on, it doesnt make any sound. but it drives my dog nuts. dog ears. things they hear.

as it stands now, if i were to leave it be, it looks like something from an old serial movie. but thats not the game i set out to play. maybe if i made the first one id do that.

anyway, pics to come at a later day.

cant wait to see the update!

is there a rocketeer forum by any chance?

here’s an update

im not happy with how it turned out. my buddy never got around to bondoglassing the foam tits, so i had to find a suitable substitute.

they’re bowls.

also, im not entirely sure the plating around the fan vent is the same size on either side, so im fixing that too.

its a mess.

i also want to get working on those fins at the bottom of the boosters, because those are neat. im not sure if i’ll make them move, but i will make it look like they sure can.

also when i finish this bad boy up i hope to sell single rocket packs that look like one of the boosters from this.

singe booster jetpacks are cool.

Could you post some photos of the center section to show more detail on how you constructed it? I know there is a mixing bowl and wire mesh, but I’m interested in seeing exactly how it is connected to the tubes and such.

I’m actually getting ready to build a Rocketeer pack myself for Halloween.

hot glue and friction, and then over that chop mat and resin.

Loved The Rocketeer when it came out! I got the Medicom version of the figure about a year ago. Total quality.

i also plan on making a new helmet. im not happy with this one.

so, im in the process of moving. i dont really have much to do right now, and im dying for something to work on, so ive been working on reworking my jetpack. all my resin work and bondo work have to wait, because im unhappily broke. its really frustrating knowing certain things are so close to being finished, but i cant.

however last night while i was restlessly laying in bed and watching role models, i figured out i could start adding the lower fins. this is the progress of that, and what ive done to rework the pack to get near my liking. im trying to get everything situated on the pack that i can do easily with out resin or bondo because i dont have either, and its driving me up the wall.

i know a few of you were keeping up on this, and a few more had some questions, here’s some more stuff, to raise more questions.

this is the bowl i bought at target, to fit perfectly in the 6" airconditioning duct booster tubes. it’ll set you back maybe 2 bucks, 4 for 2. i’ll add on the cones by using the center of a paper plate with resin.

they’re just sat on there, showing that its possible. they did eventually get hotglued on. i’ll need to bondo over the glue, and figure out a better way to make it look smoother. the plating doesnt match up to the missle ■■■■■, so i’ll have to finagle some posterboard when i get the center plating figured out.

this is when i learned i really ■■■■■■■ hate bondoglass. it doesnt leave a smooth coat and it is a bitch to work with. but it helped build up what i need so i can bondo a smooth coat over it when i finally get it. i had to rework the center of the upside down T and the right side of the center, because its height didnt match up to the otherside’s height. you’ll also see where i marked with tape where the cosmetic plating of the center piece stops on the booster tubes. im still figuring out how i want to approach that part of it. like i mentioned before, posterboard or even thick paper might be the route i go for the plating, but also like i mentioned, i need resin for that. im not 100 percent finished with this, because i dont like how that center T thing looks.

this one shows where i marked off the center plating, at the top, and where i need to cut off at the bottom of the tubes. i cut along the top of the tape, which was almost a bitch and a half so, i recommend when you do get around to making your own, you take a peice of 2" masking tape to the bottom of the whole thing and cut it flat, rather than cut it together. i may have ruined the measurements by doing this, but it looks alot closer to all my reference pics of the bottom

this is the front of the bottom after i cut the tape off. see that black schmutz? see how it goes at a funny angle? that black schmutz means i need to add bondo to smooth that badboy out. when that’s finished i’ll drill a hole and put in a vent i have laying around in a prop box. also, notice how the bottom of my boosters dont match the bottom of those boosters? you know the actual rocket part? yeah it bothers the ■■■■ out of me too. fortunately i found an alternative i can use instead at home depot for under 3 bucks. not to worry.

reference for the bottom front

this picture shows how im attaching the fins to the bottom, its an awful picture but here’s kind of an explanation of whats going on here. i eyeballed the measurements, its a 7" cut of 1"pvc pipe, the sched doesnt matter because im going to fill it with bondo and fiber bondo so i can bolt the flippers (god damnit why couldnt i remember flippers, ive called them everything but flippers) to them. anyway, you’re also going to have to finagle it to work around the tube. you can see i had to cut mine in half, and cut cut cut until it sort of worked. when i get bondo, i’ll fill in gaps and match them to the tubes, then do a fake glue weld even though there isnt one. they arent lop sided, i think i took the picture of the pack leaning on something. i moved it around alot for these shots.

this is another picture of the back, showing the bottom pvc things, and how i constructed the back. when you’re making your own ive seen details of the back of the real deal, but its something you dont have to fret too much over. just make sure you have somewhere to put the rods for your flippers and your electronics. im also going to try and fill in what i can here and make it more sturdy.

this is just a pic of the top of the pack with those vent things removed, im also going to rework them, but this illustrates how its being held together.

if you have any questions dont hesitate to ask.

Looking awesome PC

the Rocketeer, my 2nd favorite costume! any updated pics of the helmet?
