Wow, they chose to replace the iconic Ecto-1 siren sound with a really generic one. That’s just plain disappointing.
Can’t win if they do something different, can’t win if they do something the same. :sigh:
I’ve been a critic from the get go. They would have swayed me to plop down money opening day if they’d kept the original Ecto and not this…thing. I’ll bet if you look deep enough in the car cushions you’ll still be able to find a tiny bit of Harry’s Sasquatch fur.
This is how I see it as to why they didn’t have the original Ecto-1 for the reboot.

The car is now 57 years old, with a noted history of the engine failing. The first concern that immediately comes to mind is that the car is now too valuable to put through the rigours of filming action scenes in cities that are as crowded as Boston and New York, Sony is able to shell out the cost of insurance to display it at public events (and as the car is usually transported from location to location on a trailer, it can sit pretty and do a minimal amount of moving under its own power). Insuring the car for location scenes in the two cities, with an engine which may still not be 100% reliable may not have been considered feasible.

1959 Cadillacs are likely even rarer now than they were in 1984, with fewer replacement parts available for servicing the vehicles (short of special reproduction), a filming schedule would probably just be too taxing on the original Ecto-1, and raise the risk of permanently putting 1984 Ecto-1 off the road. On top of that, the production would have a tricky time finding a Miller Meteor S&S, or even a close approximation for a reasonable budget, which could be sold to them (as we’ve seen, there are a lot of hearse/ambulance enthusiasts who hate it when people make Ecto-1 replicas, I bet they’d turn down offers from Sony). While the choice of vehicle is going to be like marmite for people, at least with a vehicle made in 1984, they have a wider pool of replacement parts available (and there’s one photo showing a guy working on 2016 Ecto-1’s engine), and we even able to get two vehicles kitted out for the film, not just one.

The 1984 Ecto-1 may not fit the aesthetic of the reboot’s team and tone, the Packs, Traps and uniforms all look like they’ve been assembled with a smaller budget than the 1984’s team, and also are a reflection of the different approach the reboot team has to the classic team. Having the car be the same 1959 Cadillac, while the uniforms and equipment looked different, would have led to confusion for some watchers, and would have inspired ire and hatred from others (just look at how many people have criticised the appearance of the Firehouse).

Even when the car was only a spry 25 years old, it still didn’t quite live up to what the production were hoping to get out of the old girl, hence the shots where her movement was sped up to look more dramatic. Whether the slowness was caused by the roof equipment (a strong possibility), or because the '59 was almost certainly heavier and more unwieldy than her '84 sibling, we’ll never fully know, but as we can see from the trailer shots and the vignette, the younger sister is more nimble, more up to pulling off those dramatic driving shots with which we’ve become so familiar with thanks to The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters, rather than the films.
It’s not as sleek as the 1984 Ecto-1, it’s not as iconic or as archetypical, or as classic as the original, and I sadly acknowledge that in the future history of the franchise there’ll always be those who consider it the ugly sister, the lesser relation… however I think it’s pretty clear why they went for the 1984 hearse over the 1959 ambulance. There’ll also be plenty of discussion as to what car might have been a better choice, and there are those which would have made a more appropriate vehicle in terms of looks, but it’ll be a while before we might see another vehicle take on the name. For what it’s worth, I think it was an interesting choice… and a better one, going for an older vehicle rather than a modern one.

It still could have been done. While they didn’t have to use the original they could have done what Ferriss Bueller had with the Ferrari replica.

The more I see of the film the more I’m excited for the ones who are excited to go so it. I really hope they all enjoy it.
I wonder if they could have pulled it off in CGI? I do agree from a logistical stand point that it probably would have been a nightmare if the studio only had one available and something went wrong. Then you are either resigning yourself to very limited use with a second unit or, if that is not a concession you can make, then multiple examples of a newer model. Could you imagine the outrage if feig accidentally cracked up either original ecto to film the reboot?
Considering the negative reaction over the CGI (that isnt 100% CGI anyways) we’ve seen thus far I think a CG classic Ecto-1 would have been an unwise move. The original Ecto-1 was the first vehicle I ever fell in love with yet I completely understand the need to do something different for GB2016.
From the plot synopsis, we do know they lose the ecto 1 during the climax of the movie thx to a certain joyriding ghost, so maybe the next car has a more familiar look?

slimer and female slimer steal the ecto driving it right into the portal where Rowan will ends in the final battle. The two green ghosts doesn’t come back. Will they ends up in OUR New York…from where maybe Slimer came when Rowan activates his Call-All-Ghosts-From-Other-Dimensions achine?
