Semi Hero GB2 electronics Identification

This is a wrap up of my research on the GB2 semi hero electronics to explain how they are controlled. Once again, if it weren’t for Ken Huegel’s purchase of an original proton pack a few years back, this would have been impossible.

Power cell: A wire wrapped custom job consisting of a perf board, 15 JKL 7328 6V bulbs with sockets and all the components you see here.

Cyclotron: Electronic Effects FC-2 chaser board with a jumper hooked up between “5 & R” to create a delay between cycles. The board is hot glued to a perf board with 4 6V JKL 7328 bulbs and sockets.

Proton Gun: Electronic Effects FL-1 controls blinking clear arcolectric 1041 only. Red Arcolectric 1041 slo blo light is static, milky white light cap is static, bargraph is the indicator portion of an Eaton Roto Tellite.

Milky white next to vent and orange hat light on gun ear are not hooked up. No barrel lights or vent light.

Toggle switch on trigger box turns everything on.

Everything is powered by 2 Makita 9.6V batteries attached to the motherboard above the neck padding on the Alice frame.

Now to find someone that can wirewrap!

Also, that Tellite indicator is fun to play with.

Do you think that the white hat light and the slo blo light were piggy backed off of something else or would they have been on a stand alone board of their own?

The bargraph, hat light, and slo blo static lights are directly hooked up to the battery

P.S. TJ has made an amazing wire wrap working reproduction of the powercell

I’m going to have everything to replicate the electronics in my semi hero but that.

Nice job on covering this. I have the parts and think I will try to duplicate the wire wrapped power cell. I did a lot of wire wrapping back in the day.

It’s been a while but I’ve been thinking about wiring up my fiberglass semi hero thrower and I’m not sure about the Roto Tellite. Would a positive lead go to each bulb and negative to the center post? I’m hoping either Nosllit or MBurkit will chime in as I believe both of them have wired these up.

I wired up 2 yellow leds with a resistor inside of mine and just have the wires running out the back of it; since there’s 2 holes back there. I think Nosllit is putting incandescent bulbs in there and I’m not sure how different his set up will be.

I thought about using LEDs as well. I figured since I had the incandescent bulbs I’d use them though.

Joe, what I used was incandescent bulbs for all the lights in the semi hero. The roto-tellite center post is connected the side casing of the miniature ■■■■■■ bulb.

I made a batch of warm white LEDs for use in hat lights and the roto-tellite where the bottom is wired for positive and side is ground.

Don’t mean to bump an old thread…but I thought some of you might find this interesting.

I was just watching Two and a Half Men (S12X12 “A Beer-Battered Rip-Off”), and saw something familiar near the start of the episode. Anyone else notice them…?

Yep, I think that looks like a pair of FC2s being used in the electronics!

I’m no expert, but I reckon the one on the left is even being used ‘cyclotron-style,’ as one set of lights on the front are a four-light chase (the green lights being used for the oesophagus in the next picture).

Although, it looks like it’s set to run a bit faster and there’s no ‘semi-hero pause’ (I think you can just about see a red wire jumpering ‘R’ and ‘4’ for continuous chase).

If these really are FC2s, I thought it was amazing that these things are still in use over 30 years later, and still in basically the same way!
