Sony head of Product Marketing George Leon steps down

Interesting because he’s been in charge of the marketing tie ins and general promotion of gb16, and it seems to be an abrupt severing of ties.

Any thoughts? What’s it mean for the summer marketing and promotion campaign. Did Leon get pushed into leaving because of the trailer?

I would have fired Paul Feig, unless George was the one who hired Paul to direct, but I would think that this is a backlash from Pixels and the house that threw or barfed up the recent GB trailers…

Important to point out, George is not the “head of marketing” at Sony. Per the article, he is:

Promotional tie-ins/partnerships, consumer marketing and licensing… may be semantics to some but…

With any hope they pull this from releasing. not likely after all the merchandise has now been made though.

Speaking of merchandising I have a t-shirt of your image handle but can’t really wear it now because of the new movie. I don’t want to wear it in case people thinking I’m promoting the new movie. Hope I get to wear it one day. Maybe at home.

Yeah, because they’re suddenly going to pull a 180 and decide to not release the reboot after all. What’s one and a half million down the drain?

Let’s be realistic, people.

So the head of marketing steps down and you guys immediately jump to the conclusion that it’s tied to the reboot?

Bravo.

Rofl, right. I hate the GB community sometimes.

Your right, the serious lack of any kind of promotion for one of Sony’s biggest fan franchises (that’s also been selling products for the past 30 years), record number of dislikes and bashing the trailer (I don’t care how you spin it, internet voices matter people) has nothing to do with the employee in charge of marketing their products stepping down within the same month of the huge backlash not only from the public but celebrities as well.

Purely coincidental, of course. Carry on.

Only he did not make the trailer. He was responsible for stuff like product placement and getting movies merch in happy meals and logo’s on your lawn blowers and drinks.

What’s it they say about egos and assuming things always revolve around oneself?

Go ahead and be upset. However, his decision to leave might have been for any number of reasons. Unless he comes up and makes it known that the reboot is the direct reason for him leaving all you’re doing is speculatating.

I’m not upset, just a huge coincidence that he’s stepping down shortly after the giant backlash from this movie. Marketing not only consists of actual products but advertising as well, which there has been ZERO except for the teaser posters. People resign from the film industry all the time, yet this particular one makes headlines 17 days after the trailer bombed. He didn’t make the trailer? Okay. It’s still advertising a product, he should have made a better decision since they obviously had more than one trailer to choose from. But whatever, hope he has a great retirement.

I did say it’s not likely. unfortunately.

Some movies have been in production for years, are nowhere near release and there are ads everywhere.

GB '16 is 4 months from release and all we have is the most disliked trailer in Youtube history.

That says it all about what Sony thinks about the movie if you ask me.

I see I have to clarify: Head of Marketing is a misleading title. He was not head of all the Marketing. He was head of Product Marketing.

He makes deals with other companies to promote their current movie, insert the brand in the movie and come up with special products like Ecto-Cooler.

Marketing in such a huge company is obviously devided in many departments, with their own heads. So yes, he had nothing to do with posters and trailers. He had everything to do with M&M’s being tied to GB16. ( you can see red M&M in the trailer during the times square section).

Nice try. Read the article next time.

If only we could have a moratorium on meme gifs.

Sometimes a coincidence is a coincidence, and while the timing might suggest he was given the chop because of the reboot, there may be other extenuating circumstances we aren’t aware of that might’ve been bigger motivations at Sony.

I like memes, they can alleviate an uncomfortable situation with humor.
