Speedy's Proton Pack Mk1 with pics and video.

Since the success of my first bash at Ecto Goggles, I have now started building my first pack that I intend to wear at my nightclub event on Halloween. Although I have studied other gbfans member’s pack with envy, marvelling at the detail and sheer craftsmanship that has been bestowed upon them, I have opted for a simpler setup as I am sure that a club full of Psy-trance loonies is not the best place to take a movie-accurate pack costing lots of money and even more man hours. I have gone for visual impact over accurate detail, and have taken a few liberties with the dressing up of the pack. The Psy-trance scene is heavily into visuals, lighting and UV effects, so with this in mind I have added as much light-up parts as I can. The intention is to have something that looks fantastic in the club, rather than in the cold light of day!

The pack is based on a Studio Creations vacuformed shell, which is perfect for my build as it is very light weight but strong enough to take knocks and bumps. The light weight is very important as there is a 7Ah sealed lead-acid battery inside to power all the goodies. The powercell lights are blue LEDs driven by a VU meter circuit so they are sound-reactive. The cyclotron lights will be red 10mm LEDs that are driven by a simple chaser circuit, but will be overridden by fast-flashing strobe tubes when the wand is fired. The N-filter holes have been drilled out and now have chasing red LEDs behind aluminium mesh. The wand will have orange rectangular LEDs stacked to create the bargraph, again driven by a simple chaser circuit but with 2 different sequence settings. There will also be two strobe tubes and strobing red and blue LEDs in the gun barrel to give a nice dramatic flashing effect when the pack is fired. To finish off the lighting, I will be threading 1.3mm white EL wire through all the coloured hoses so that they glow from the inside, these too will be sound reactive. I am also tinkering with a tiny 12volt smoke generator made from a PC fan and some wire from a toaster, to give a smoking effect to the N filter.

If that lot isn’t enough, I have also added the mother of all pack sound systems. A stereo 2.1 amplifier will be powering a pair of 4" 40watt drivers, along with a Wharfedale 5.25" subwoofer, and sounds will be thanks to a Replica Props sound chip. I intend for this pack to be both seen and heard!

All the dress-up parts (ion arm, clippards, bumper etc) came from nick-a-tron and Sevv, and hopefully will be finished off with some of Alexei’s decals if they are done in time. All pack parts were treated to three coats of primer, two coats of silver and finished with satin black topcoats. I cut the motherboard myself from 2mm aluminium sheet and fabricated simple brackets so the shell halves can easily be removed. The ALICE pack frame is from a surplus supplier in the US as I couldn’t find any here in the UK.

Thats all for now, the grand task of fixing all the resin pieces is next, and then the wiring of all the pack lights. I’m still eagerly awaiting my wand kit from MMM which I’m sure is going to result in a few late nights for me when it gets here, as you can see I really have my work cut out to be ready in less than three weeks!

Again, this is not intended to be movie-accurate and as such there are a few aspects that will have the purists going bananas! I’m saving the construction of a more accurate version until the new year, as I said this one is going into battle with a thousand ravers at my club night. Tackling Gozer, Vigo and Mr Stay-Puft is sod all when you are hosting a club full of nutters!

Okay, so it’s been a while since I last posted about my pack progress. A combination of work commitments and illness robbed me of vital build time and not much got done, to the point where I honestly didn’t think I’d get everything done in time for Halloween night. But a couple of v long days and v late nights made up for lost time and I’m pleased to say that I actually finished my pack at 6.30pm on the 31st, and was out showing off my pack at our first Halloween party at 8.30pm that evening! The only major changes from my original plan was discarding the subwoofer as the 2.1 amplifier did not arrive from the supplier in time, and the smoke generator was not working as well as I would have liked so was left off until such time as I can fine tune it for more output. Other than that, everything else came together and everyone who saw me and my kit that night were blown away by it, the GB community was well represented in Southend that night!!! The connector hose/tube coming from the wand has 3 core mains cable carrying 12v positive supply to the wand, a 12v positive return from the ‘activate’ switch, and a 12v negative common. There is also two runs of 8 core alarm cable which run between the wand switches and the Replica Props sound chip mounted in the bottom of the cyclotron.

Almost there! Lower part of pack shell fitted, just tidying remaining cables and configuring the wires for the substitute amplifier, also fitting a cable from recessed phono socket in base of cyclotron directly to the battery to allow charging from a wall charger. The EL wire is coiled up at the Legris elbow on the side of the cyclotron, waiting to be fed up through the red tubing. Also you can see the panel meter for battery charge level and main switch for 12v power.

Finished! Photo taken at around 6.30pm on Halloween, a few minutes after I had fitted the last bolt, applied the fantastic decals (huge huge thankyou to Alexei!!!), added some ‘paint chips’ with a silver Sharpie, and dusted it down with some Fuller’s earth. Very pleased with myself at this point!

Taken after I got home on Sunday morning, the battery held up really well, showing 10.4v on the panel meter. You can just make out the glow of the EL wire inside the thin red tubing running from the HGA down to the PPD and then down to the cyclotron, I plan to extend this to all the rest of the tubing on the pack.

Very pleased with the ‘firing’ effect created by the three LED circuits, is super bright and really looks the part.

Another shot taken after I got home, all gun lights worked well. The ‘activate’ switch powers the whole pack up including ‘startup’ sound, and powers it down again with ‘shutdown’ sound. The ‘intensify’ button fires the wand with respective ‘firing’ lights and sound, and also has a ‘shutdown’ sound. The upper switch on the main body of the wand activates the ‘pack vent’ sound and changes the blue LED on the top of the gunbox to red when operated, and the lower switch sets off the ‘pack hum’ looped audio which stays running until another sound is triggered.

So there you go, my first go at a Proton Pack. I had a lot of fun making it, and took a lot of satisfaction making up my own circuits and wiring looms. The finished pack is quite heavy, and I must admit after wearing it all night my shoulders ached for a while! But the response from everyone who saw it made all the effort worthwhile, the best moment was when a group of lads came past the club in GB outfits with the inflatable packs, they all looked a little miffed when they clocked this!

Thanks again to all on GBfans.com who have helped, advised, and commented on my efforts. I take inspiration from many of the other pack builders out there who have put much more time and effort into their own packs, and fully intend to make my Mk2 pack a true work of art. For now, Proton Pack Mk1 is going to be hung on my living room wall so I can look at it every day!

Thanks for the feedback, it’s true the shell isn’t the most detailed but nobody seemed to mind on the day! I would have loved a detailed shell from the likes of Sevv or Exoray but I just didn’t have the funds, hence the home-made lighting and sound system. The Studio Creations vacuum formed shell was about £40 plus the shipping and VAT compared to the £200 or more for the resin ones. Plus I think a resin shell would have added far too much weight, I’ve not actually weighed this baby yet but lets say I had proper aching shoulders for a while after wearing it all night! The good news is that Jeff from Studio Creations is refining his vacuum form shells so I’m hoping his next model will carry sharper detail and yet retain the light weight advantage over resin casts, as soon as he gets that sorted I’ll be ordering one. For now I’m very pleased with my first attempt and chuffed with all the great comments, cheers!

I’ve also scrapped the 2.1 amplifier idea, as the amp was a pile of ■■■■ so I’m sticking with the trusty Radiomobile item and a solid 80watts of audio goodness!!

Unless I missed something it looks fine now.

What was the cycle you had for the various wiring lightup features? It looks like some dim, and some brighten over time, or by gun controls.

The powercell lights are driven by a 12 segment VU meter circuit, so will react to sound rather that ‘pulse’ like the normal style powercell lights. This is also the case for the pack hoses, mainly the red hose from cyclotron to PPD to HGA, and the blue hose from PPD to the Dale resistor on the Ion Arm, the EL wire inside these hoses will react to sound too, so activating the pack sounds (firing wand, pack vent, pack hum etc) will make these lights operate, and they will go off when no sounds are present. Also, any other ambient sounds will get a reaction too, not just the onboard pack sounds. The EL wire can be made to stay on permanently with a switch on its control box, which is fixed to the underside of the cyclotron, but I prefer the sound-reactive mode personally!
