Did a quick and dirty tear down of the new gigameter. Hope it’s helpful for anyone curious on how this thing works. I stopped at the light dome because I wasn’t sure how it came off and I didn’t want to break this thing on the first day of owning it. The plastic is cheap, but actually much better than I was expecting. Also, be EXTREMELY careful with the ears. They feel softer than the rest of the unit and feel like they can snap or have the gearing stripped if they get bumped hard or held in place.
Great teardown, answers a lot of questions I had about this.

Looks like it’d be fairly trivial to solder an inline resistor to lower the speaker volume (I’ve read complaints that it’s too loud).
Yeah, I’m not too worried… and I’m probably going to just disconnect the speaker. OH! I totally forgot to mention that the JST connections feel like they’re glued in place using something other than hot glue. I wanted to disconnect them, but they wouldn’t budge.

I threw some electrical tape over the speaker grill and instantly better. I imagine all it needs is a little sound dampening foam.
It’s not surprising that it’s just so deafening, the PKE suffers from the same problem.
It’s a surprisingly good speaker XD I’m probably just going to remove it and use it in another project.
outside of speaker volume and the awful paint job (and maybe long term build quality issues) it’s surprisingly nice.
The two main mods I can seen is replacing the ears for something more accurate. Obviously a 3D print could match it in construction and weight and be an easy switch out. But I wonder if the original Realistic mics can be used.
The other is the lack of the decimals on the screen. They are there but don’t light up. Since we hear Egon say “two point 5” it would be cool if it read like that.
I mean, they also pull some numbers off the PKE meter on a “screen” that’s just two rows of LEDs, so…
That’s an argument between screen and idealized. You could argue that there can be a number readout somewhere on that screen because they mention one. But we never see one.
But I don’t think we ever see a clear shot of the screen on the Giga Meter during the film. So if the decimal exists on the screen, odd not to use what was mentioned in that case in my opinion.
Yeah, I was being cheeky (it’s been a day and it’s not even 10 AM yet). I’d have to take a look at the display, but it might not be too difficult to swap out the last digit with another digital read out with a decimal lit up.

Is The Giga Meter lower body Hollow? Wanna make mine more screen accurate and want to add a heat sink near the dome where the fourth ridge is. Any photos of the open shell would help. Don’t want to accidentally drill or cut through any wires.
Pretty much hollow, yeah. you have the speaker and batteries in there, but compared to something like a PKE meter, it’s SPACIOUS in there. You should be able to do whatever you want with little issue.
