Had a few night to work out in the garge. Just starting out on my first pack, decided to start on the metal parts before the shell arrives. I am doing all the welding with a sratch start tig (no foot control) not optimal for sure, and it’s been about 5 years since I have done any tig welding of any kind. It’s not 100% so don’t be too harsh , might rebuild this stuff when I get back into the wing of things.
Thanks guy it was a learning experience without any real control of the weld heat. lol
No worries about making it too pretty, I like my props weathered and beaten up and this just screams out for that so that’s how it’ll be.

It’s made of 1/8" plate, tried 1/16" but I couldn’t get the welder at a low enough amperage to weld more than 1/2" before it bruned through. I made it in 4 pieces and all bend sections (3) were cut about half way through and bent then all welded in and ground/files square then off sanded to get a bit of the odd shape these seem to be from screencaps. The rounded section was heated to about 300deg and hammered over with a wood backer. Weight without the gun track but with the bottom plate is 15oz or 425gr right now, is that heavy? It’s going to be a dislplay piece so weight isn’t really an issue.
Thanks for the offer on the wheels/discs but I’ll be lathing out all my pieces, just like to machine every once in a while and the mill and lathe don’t get used enogh.
Jumping off the thorwer for a bit and had a little time to work on the bumper tonight, just got the base machined. It’s made from 2" stainless pipe with 1/2" wall turned down to 1.5", I’ll heat treat it now to turn it the gold colour it needs to be then It’ll machine out and epoxy on a aluminum top.
Had a chance to go play a little bit after again tonight. The top of the bumper, thrower top knob and 2 gun track disc’s (only one shown) Also heat treated the Sainless Steel to produce the gold tint.
I was interested in what it actually does to the metal to change it (if its a chemical reaction or whatever), and what heat treating is normally used for.
All it consists of is heating the metal to the point it changes colour. The hotter you get the more rich the gold colour will become. If you don’t like it polish it back out and you’ll have the silver again.

Go right ahead and steal that. I built it out of stainless because any Vaccum pump bellows or selinoid valve/bellows I ever worked with were always stainless steel so only made sense. The gold colour comes in with the heating up of the pump. Also exhaust flex (basically the same as a bellows sectoin) is stainless as well.

Yes that is good info and correct. I should have used a different term when I said “heat treating” I should have said “I will now heat the stainless to turn it the gold tint it needs to be”. It has nothing else to do with anything in a static prop besides the colour change.
