THIS IS IT, THIS IS DEFINATELY IT!!! I'M GOING TO NEW YORK!!

Well, its finally happening, my life long dream of going to New York and visiting all the Ghostbusters I&II filming locations starts on the 23rd of March when i fly out from England to Newark. I am so excited words cannot describe!! Just a few questions to throw at you guys here, i’m definately going to be taking my GB flighsuit, and want to keep the rest as minimalistic as possible. Was thinking about taking my belt, elbow pads, gloves and ecto goggles. Now, with the ecto goggles, with there being screws attached etc how do you think it would go getting through security at the airport? Has anyone done this, i’m sure you have. I dont want to end up in airport lock up over my Goggles  Secondly, is there a thread on here that anyone has a direct link to without me trawling through everything for all of the addresses of the locations, and has anyone ever put a guide up on how to navigate your way around New York on the tubes to get to these locations efficiently as possible? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys.

Bill

R.I.P Mr Harold Ramis, this trip will be my little tribute to you Sir, thanks for everything.

Regarding the Ecto Goggles:

It might be advisable to leave them at home, as well as any of the more technical-looking elements of the belts, you don’t want airport security mistaking them for something more malevolent… and as there are restrictions on real Night Vision Goggles, the people working security might mistaken them for the real deal.

As for the locations, there used to be a pretty good film location website… but it went belly-up a few years back.

Ghostbusters

The Firehouse: Corner of N.Moore Street and Varrick.

-Take the 1 train to Franklin Street Station, exit the station and walk one block north and you should see the Firehouse.

55 Central Park West/Columbus Circle/Tavern on the Green

-Take the 1 train from Franklin to Columbus Circle Station. Disembark for the Circle (where Stay Puft appears) and then walk six blocks north for Dana’s apartment building. Tavern on the Green is located almost directly opposite 55 Central Park West.

Columbia University

-Take the 1 train to the 116th Street Station. “Weaver Hall” was in fact the Schermerhorn Hall building on the campus, located at the north-eastern corner. Ray and Peter’s conversation on the steps after they’ve been kicked out take place on a raised section next to the CV Star East Asian Library building, overlooking the main square of the campus in front of The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

City Hall/“The Loading Dock”

-Take the 4, 5 or 6 to City Hall - Brooklyn Bridge Station, there should be an entrance on the edge of City Hall Park. You will be able to see City Hall from a distance, but since at least 2001 there has been a tight control of who can and can’t get close to City Hall. The “loading dock” was actually filmed at the Municipal Building (identifiable by the golden statue on the top).

New York Public Library/The Bank

-Take the 7 train to the 42nd Street – Bryant Park / Fifth Avenue station, there should be signage directing you to the Library if there isn’t a stop nearby, but sticking to Fifth Avenue should result in you finding it quickly. The bank exterior (although substantially changed) is located across the street from the Library, to the left of “Superfund”.

Lincoln Center

-Take the 1 train to 66th Street - Lincoln Center Station and walk one block south, or walk east and one block south from 55 Central Park West.

Rockefeller Center

  • Take the B, D, M or F trains to the 47th–50th Streets – Rockefeller Center Station, walk one block north and then one block east to reach the area featuring the skating rink/statue of Prometheus.

Ghostbusters II

The Courthouse

  • Walk one block north from the Municipal Building into Foley Square, the Courthouse is located on the south-eastern side of the square.

Peter’s Apartment: Corner of Broadway and Bleecker Street

-Take the 6 train to Bleecker Street Station and walk one block west or the B, D, F or M trains to Broadway-Lafayette Station and walk half a block west and one block North.

Dana’s Apartment/First Avenue Dig: 325 East 77th Street

-Take the 4 or 6 trains to 77th Street Station, and walk two and a half blocks East for the filming exterior of Dana’s Apartment. Walk the rest of the block to the intersection with First Avenue where the baby carriage rolled out into traffic(this is not the same location where the dig was filmed - that happened in Los Angeles).

The Museum: U.S. Customs House

-Take the 4 or 5 trains to Bowling Green Station, it should be visible from the street entrance.

The Statue of Liberty

-Take the 1 train to South Ferry Station and board one of the Circle Line boats to Liberty Island (if you wish to enter the statue, be sure to book your tickets in advance online to avoid disappointment)

Washington Square Arch

-Take the A, B, C, D, E, F or M trains to West 4th Street Station and walk one block east.

There are more locations scattered through the two movies, but those are the main ones.

For more info, here’s Scouting NY's two-part feature on the first movie’s filming locations:

Scouting NY: Ghostbusters - Part 2

Additional location

Van Horne Station

If you fancy seeing one of the real-world inspirations for the disused, slime-filled train station in the second movie, stay on the 6 train as it leaves City Hall - Brooklyn Bridge Station to head back uptown… you should be treated with a brief view of the “ghost” City Hall station, closed since 1945: City Hall (IRT Lexington Avenue Line)

This should be stickied somewhere. Well done, Ben.

Seriously! Bookmarked and thanks Kingpin.

We could probably do with a specific tour-guide topic, one that links to the tour guide podcast if that’s still available.

Just a small but important correction regarding the NYC subways: the #1 train runs local / makes local stops all times. The #2 train runs express in Manhattan all times except late nights (12am-6am), so it will not stop at Franklin St, Columbus Circle, or Lincoln Center (those are local stops) unless it is late at night.

Is that all the filming locations in new york or just most?

Also congratz, on the trip, super jealous

Thanks for the correction. Google Maps didn’t specify any difference.

Most of them, places like those seem in the montages aren’t covered.

I have a friend who recently moved from here in north Alabama to Brooklyn. His wife keeps posting photos online of interesting sights in Manhattan, and I keep replying with pics of those same locations as shooting sites. So far she showed herself framed by the Washington Square Arch, to which I responded, “Be careful, it’s haunted” and attached the arch-monster from GB2, and then she posted a pic of interestingly-dressed folks on the sidewalk, but the George M. Cohan statue was visible behind, and I knew it was the same spot they filmed Louis Tully for one shot.

I may send them this list and see if they enjoy finding more sites on purpose instead of accidentally. I’ll get them familiar with all the locales on their own time, then crash on their couch one day and get them to give me the most efficient tour!

Kingpin, thanks buddy, that has been a great help!! I think i will take your advice and leave the goggles at home, dont want to be kicked out of the country before i have even really got in

I have to agree with what Ben has said, I took my flightsuit, boots, leg hose, elbow pads and belt with the fobs and holsters, left my belt gizmo at home though. It was enough to take in my case and carry around the day in New York in my bag, you’d be surprised how irritatingly heavy that gets after a whole day of sight seeing. That being said, I geared up across the road and got an amazing once in a life time photo at the firehouse dressed as a Ghostbuster. The uniform alone is more than enough, people knew exactly what I was dressed as and why I was at Ladder 8. The highlights for me were having a woman and her two young sons, both wearing ghostbuster shirts having a photo with a Ghostbuster (me) outside the firehouse, it made their day and was really nice to do something like that. The other? Well diagonally across from Ladder 8 is a NYPD station. I’m in my gear, gazing in awe at the firehouse when I see flashing blue lights and a siren going WOOP WOOP behind me. I turn round to see two NYPD officers in their car both giving me the thumbs up  priceless

I’d also add to Ben’s GB list Times Square, behind the large neon US flag, which I think is a US army recruitment office, is the square where Venkman did his “breakdance” in the music video

I’d also suggest seeing Grand Central, it’s one of the finest Train Stations in the world.

If you’re a comic book fan, stop on by Midtown Comics as well.

Happy for you that you’ll be able to visit NYC and the Ghostbusters filming locations. I haven’t been able to visit them all, want to when I have the time. I guess I use to take it for granted when I use to live about 40 miles from NYC. I could still make the trip, it just isn’t as close to home.

GBI (now GB Inc) has a links page just for Ghostbusters touring information. Don’t worry I won’t “force” you to go there. Here are the links, if they don’t help, might as well take the state shuttle from Newark to Toms River. j/k

I couldn’t find the Ghostbustours site that use to have a domain name with info and download links with the video tour which included surrounding area sightseeing as well.

Just as well Spengs posted the Spook Central link, I got the Courthouse wrong.

The map I built on Ghostbusters Wiki has all the current locations noted.

Spook Central had many finds a few years ago including:

*Sun Building (Reporter location in GB1) http://www.theraffon.net/~spookcentral/loc_ny_broadway.htm

*Chinatown/Jogging in Chinatown GB1 Shot On Site - Won't You Take Me To Chinatown - theraffon

*16 East 63rd Street (Ray in the GB1 montage comes to the surface with a smoking trap) Spook Central - New York - 16 East 63rd Street - theraffon

*Orrefors Crystal Gallery GB2 Spook Central - New York - Orrefors - theraffon

*West 116th Street & Broadway (Across the street from Columbia University) (Flipped shot of Ecto-1 in montage) Spook Central - New York - West 116th Street & Broadway - theraffon

The ScoutingNY site has a nice writeup on Ramis, specifically his childhood hero being Egon.

Its really overwhelming me the epic task that i have ahead of me. I will be filming it all aswell and releasing a documentary hopefully, i dont think anyone has actually ever done every single little location and filmed it have they? Was the closest James Rolfe? Who did a great job by the way, and i hope he doesnt mind but i may be borrowing a few of his lines for my dialogue

Many on Spook Central have never been visited by fans. :sigh:
