This is mostly curiosity, since I was checking out TC’s thrower kits and found out they’re resin, and I mistakenly thought they were plastic.
So I began wondering, for pre made kits, are resin and metal the only options out there?
I ask since, in all honesty, I don’t trust resin. I’ve broken a few resin statues on accident when they fell off my shelf, and at a convention at least once people were advised to not handle a prop on a table due to it being resin, and when looking at budget steampunk guns some I liked I found out to be resin, so they had no moving parts, it kind of soured my opinion on the stuff fast, and I’d rather not risk breaking my wand by dropping it on accident.
I don’t know if it’s more durable than I’m giving it credit for, so, if wrong, well, then I’m wrong :walterpeck:
It is decently durable. However until some major corp starts making proton packs you are limited on options. Make them out of whatever you can, wood, styrene, or have a kit from aluminum or resin. However I can assure you that if you drop your pack or thrower…you either didnt put enough time or money into it haha. I’d all but punch a puppy in the face to keep mine safe.
I supposed it really depends on the fragility of the detail… I had resin resistors on my last Pack and on the whole I believe they’d be fairly durable, there weren’t any thin details that could snap off.
Resin gun knobs as well would be relatively durable due to the details not being too likely to snap off.
A resin Proton Gun would be at more risk of breakage compared to the small pieces I mentioned, but with a thick enough wall it could still be durable.
That being said, if you can afford a metal Proton Gun then I say go for it!
I would imagine the quality of the resin would be a factor as well; IE something with more give and flex will be more likely to survive an impact than something that was more rigid and brittle.
I’d have to save for a while longer, but durability certainly is important to me. I know it’s a bad idea to beat the hell out of your pack, but I admit I can be a klutz
Same here, if I’m going to build a quality/durable pack, it’s going to be a full aluminum hero pack… which I’m going to have to save a good amount of money for…
The fragility of resin goes up as the size and weight of a piece goes up. That’s why larger things like pack shells and helmets are made with fiberglass to improve strength while reducing weight.
Is it? For some reason my thrower always feels heavier than my Throwing Chicken Mk. 1.
Anyhow, don’t worry about it too much. Resin throwers break, its what they do. Either from standard wear and tear or from natural old age. It just happens.
My completed TC V3H with aluminum pipe handles fell about 3’-0 to the garage slab a few weeks ago. Damage was a few chips off the heat sink and the collar with the ears came out of the front pipe (did not have TC’s full resin front grip assembly). Should just need to be re-glued but the missing paint will show the joint. Authentic battle damage!
Nick-A-Tron makes a fibreglass gun and it’s as tough as nails.
In regards to resin guns, my friend has a resin thrower and he dropped it an an event we were attending, he dropped it onto a concrete tiled floor and the only damage was the fins on the heatsink snapped off…So, they are pretty tough…I’ve had a few Nick-A-Tron resin guns in my possession over the years, and they’ve all been fairly sturdy.
